  • Drum Makin??

Im getting a rim here soon and need someone to tie it up.
Ted Bravescout use to make our drums.
I heard that Wiley Littlecreek isnt tying drums anymore. What about Jim Fritze(sp?) does he still make drums?

    OU,

I'm sorry to hear Wiley has retired from drum making. He was a legend.

Rock Pipestem makes drums and conducts workshops on drum making. Henry Collins also makes quality drums but lives in Lawrence, Kansas. Roger Perdasofpy also makes quality drums and lives in Texas the last I heard.

I had a bad experience with Jim Fritz. I needed a drum by a certain powwow. I gave him start up money. The drum was not ready by the powwow and he kept some of the money because of "personal expenses he had incurred." Hmmmm?

Good luck on your pursuit of a drum maker.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

I have made some drums but I am probably too far away to be cost effective. Anyone who works with drums should conduct themselves honorably. You might think about doing it yourself, that way it will always have part of you in it and you will learn something important in the process.

Here's a topic that I don't think has been covered.

Where did many of you singers acquire your drums? Sometimes drums are gifted, sometimes purchased, sometimes a drumgroup will tie their own drums, and sometimes drums are passed from generation to generation.

                                (I hope...

I recently saw an article about a drum making project that changed the lives and attitude of Native youth that were involved.

I began thinking about the drum and the many changes that have occurred in the evolution of the powwow drum.

I used to have a drum sculpture made...

What type of actual drum do you guys prefer? I like a two-hide drum using elk. It gives a nice sound without being too booming. Its hard to sing over a drum that really booms sometimes. Scott

As Natives, we pay great respect to the drum. In my tribe, I was taught to respect the drum, "take care of it and it will take care of you." Following this advice, the drum has taken me to many different lands in North America and throughout the world.
