Southern Round Dance

I am helping to facilitate an upcoming round dance. This round dance will be unique because two northern drums and one southern drum group have been invited. It will be run northern style with the arena director and announcer coming from Montana.


I have noticed southern singers entering hand drum contests lately. If the two northern drums sing on hand drums, would it be okay for the southern drum to also sing on hand drums?

It should be, because the only limitations I am familiar with when it comes to those hand drums is women(no offense) I'm not an expert or anything like that, but I believe they practice the same traditions as most plains tribes with women not touching the drum. Please correct me if I'm mistaken surely I don't know everything. But, I don't see why a southern singer wouldn't be able to use a hand drum. Look at when we go '9..what do we use. A big drum held up by singers' hands..is that not another version of a hand drum..so if you wanted to be traditionally correct at your round dance, you could have your southern singers hold a drum and sing like 'at...just some thought...

About 3 or 4 years ago, there was a big hand drum contest that took place at the Gathering. I talked two of our singers into entering. I felt a little awkward singing southern stylez on a hand drum but I had a stong desire to represent.

As it turned out, we won 3rd place. I was totally surprised considering this hand drum contest was sponsored by a well known Canadian family of singers and there were so many good groups that entered.

I appreciate your input. If you have seen southern hand drum contestants all summer long and people have no problem with it, I guess I will offer it as an option at the round dance I am helping out with.

I know silly, I was there. LOL. I think it really sounds awesome when they have chorus girls included. I'm sure you've watched the you tube clip of Kit Landry chorusing for Thunderhill.
