Both groups have awesome songs, but I would give a slight edge to Cozad for compositions. Singing ability? Southern Thunder. It's not even close.
I don't know if either are "the best." Southern Thunder v. Yellowhammer is the better debate.Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Southern Thunder has recorded more old Pawnee songs, composed by men long gone, than new compositions. They definately have more singing ability than the Cozads. Both Frank and Herb Adson can flat jam. Frank more in the pow-wow arena and Herb on their rez for tribal functions. They are both well respected men. Southern Thunder v. Yellowhammer, man ol' man!!!

they are both good, especially in their prime~~
Cozads, great fancy dance and gourd dance singers
Southern Thunder~Str8 dance is their specialty...
They are both well educated into thier music(gourd dance pawnee songs & such), not putting down their own composed songs, I like the old ones myself.:indian2: MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL, JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME IM FINE:muscles:

Tough question.
both drums, when they are all present and accounted for, are awesome. Different styles, different spirit, but both are champion drums.
Sound like I am riding the fence? Both drums are my uncles and brothers. ha ha
They each have their specialties, so you can't really compare them in that respect.
But yellowhammer is the ultimate, against anyone. The last time they were at Schemiztun, I was standing on a bench with a couple of the Cozad singers when Yellowhammer sang their first intertribal on Thursday night. You could not even get close to them, so we were standing on a bench looking down at the drum while they were singing. As soon as the last drum beat ended, we looked at each other and this particular singer said"Damn, we singing for second place".
The thing about Southern Thunder and Yellow Hammer is they prefer to stay home, sing at their home celebrations, they are not really into the travel scene. They pick and choose their pow wows to travel to and they take a full crew therefore giving a committee their host drum money's worth. If they choose to travel to your pow wow, you are in for the ultimate singing treatment.I am thankful for my grandparents, my parents, my brothers, my aunties and uncles, my children, my companion and all of those who influenced me to be strong and proud of being who I am and where I come from. Knowledge is power

Hum....tough answer, but id have to say southern thunder. But Cozads are still a drum u have to love to listen to, they sound good when crewed up. Yellow Hammer is still a level above with these groups i have mentioned, but they are some keen groups out there makin a name fo themselves and i hope money and egos dont destroy them. But the to 3 in my order are Yella Hamma, Southern Thunder and cozad.
