The only southern straight dancer of note that I remember at Julyamsh was the young fella that drums with Youngbird. I think he took teens one year.

It wasn't a guy from Youngbird it was Kiowa Cozad who took second or first

Poor baby... Sorry I kidnapped ya... or should I say Spokanenapped ya... aiyyeeee.

Seriously though, wish we could make it back, but my job keeps me busy during that time. To anyone that's never been there... if you can make it... GO!!!!!

If I remember right, I think Youngbird is Host this year (pretty sure they won it last year.) The dancing is awesome, if you want to see some real chicken and round bustle dancing... that's the place to go! But before grand entry every session, there's a horse grand entry... I hope uncle Cliff is up for it, but every year I was there he would do the speaking for that, he would explain about the crier coming into the village to tell of their success in a hunt, etc. and in comes in a lone rider in traditional dress and the horse in fully beaded regalia as well, and Cliff Sijohn goes on with the story as the crier comes out and brings in the rest of the procession, about 10-15 riders all in traditional regalia with the horses in full regalia as well, they ride into the arena, line up, then exit, and just as the last rider clears the arena, the drums start up to bring in the dancers... plain and simple... AWESOME!!!!!!!! If you can make it, you won't be disappointed!!! This is hands down THE BEST POW WOW I've ever been too!!! It is the largest outdoor pow wow in the Pacific NW and was listed in Native People's magazine as one of the must see pow wows in the United States.

If you can make it... GO !!!!!

    Paselo

^^^I think she's talking about Teen Girls Traditional...during the finals, the second song was a double beat for them traditional dancers....some girls had maaaaad style;)

oh yeah - but furreals...there was a woman jingle dancer at julyamsh that did this crow-hop-lookin' step on the down beats during the sidestep song.....i thought it was old style....'cuz i seen another woman dance that way at another powwow and she was dressed pretty old style ('ju kno....no fan, no plume...).
