What has happened in the years past is that we have had no Men's Fancy. So we have turned that category into Men's Southern Straight. It will all depend on if there are no Men's Fancy again. I have been after the tribe to get a separate category anyway for both men and women to divide up the Southern and Northern. They say that we don't have the monies yet to do that. Soooooooo.....it stands as is for now. I am hoping to make this permanent next year. I know it is very hard to compete against Northern dancers...it's just getting others to see that.
We have a tribal meeting this weekend. What I will bring up is possibly having a special if the Southern Men's Straight can't have their own category
For the Drums, it's $700, $500 and $300. I am doing my best to raise over that so we can increase this b/c I know it's not much. I have a couple of more fundraisers to go through and maybe [hoping very hard! :) ] that I can raise it at least $100 more in each prize bracket. We will see.
I hope to see everyone there. This is always a good powwow and I hope money won't keep people away. We are a small tribe and trying to build on the powwow each year. It's just small moves and we will get there. Come out for the great hospitality and feeling. You will be welcomed.

I have to tell you guys.....I love my husband dearly. We were put in bind finding a head male dancer and he stepped up with no questions asked. He did it even though he and his drum group wanted to set up and he wanted to compete. He has really helped me out in this time of need. I really appreciate that. He never made money and option and I know he has a competitive spirit and wanted to compete. But he knew I needed him and he stepped up to the plate. So the head male dancer for the 16th Annual Meherrin Powwow is Jason Evans. Thank you baby!

Well everyone...I am sorry that I am just now posting this info, but I have been running around like crazy trying to get stuff done. I do hope that everyone is coming out for this one. I always have a great time. It can be cold so make sure everyone packs coats and blankets. It usually alternates years on the cold and hot thing. One year it was freezing and the next it was warm. So just come prepared.
Host Drum: Southern Sun
MC: Clark Stewart
Head Male: Jason Evans (Corrected)
Head Female: Dona Richardson
Head Judge: J. Kay (Corrected)
Arena Director: Thomas Lewis
There is dancer competition and drum competition. Competition for both doesn't start until Saturday.
Registration will be on Friday starting at 5:00 and again on Saturday at 10:00.
Let me check on the Grand Entry times. I am not sure about Friday (I believe it is 7:00). I do know Saturday will be noon and 6:00 and Sunday will be noon.
Registration fee for dancers is $3.00 for ages 0-11 and $5.00 for 12 & up. For the drums, it will be $20.00 per group.
I will get back to you also about the admission fee for the public.
There are 3 hotels in Ahoskie
Ahoskie Inn (252) 332-4165
Tomahawk Motel (252) 332-3194
Chief Motel (252) 332-2138
I have been told that there is a baseball event going on and they are getting rooms as well so everyone might want to go ahead and get their rooms ASAP.
Otherwise, you may have to travel to Roanoke Rapids to get a room, which is about 30 minutes away (I am guessing).
People are allowed to camp but there are no hookups and no bathroom facilities.
I will post more as I find things out. If you have questions, please feel free to ask.
All drums are welcome and this is not a by invitation only event.
Rainbow....if you read this; please share with Iron Necklace. I still don't have a flyer with all the info on it. If they need directions, please have them email me at [email protected].
If anyone needs more info or has questions, you may email me at the same address. I look forward to seeing you all there. The committee is working real hard to make this event better than before.

Needin' a ride
Anybody from the Charlotte County, Virginia area going down there? I'm stuck in Farmville w/o a car and could use a ride if you don't mind the company. As long as I'm back in time for class on Monday.....
