Sorry, forgot N. Traditional Women
1st Jodi Gillette
2nd?
3rd somebody Abbey
4th Justine MacArthur
I think a young lady in an orange beaded top was in second place, just can't really remember.
It was kind of small this year, alot of locals, thus alot of local winners but alot of Canadians were there too. Alot of good dancers were left out in the Men's Northern original and contemporary. Kevin Haywayhe placed, and he flat jammed though my vote was on Dana Warrington,(but I didn't get to judge, haha)
Marilyn Mountain and Nathan Smith missed the first grand entry, so Marilyn did not place in golden age, but nathan got in at the end of original.
Not too many fancy dancers, northern and southern...just enough to fill the categories in most contests. Jingle was not even full. Cloth and Men's traditional were the biggest categories. That contemporary was a good contest, they were all jamming.
I think I heard that next year the committee is going to try to get the original staff, Dale, Jonathon, Rg, Wallace to come back. Hopefully that will bring the dancers back, because this pow wow used to be huge.I am thankful for my grandparents, my parents, my brothers, my aunties and uncles, my children, my companion and all of those who influenced me to be strong and proud of being who I am and where I come from. Word is this is a big "party" pow-wow, with the casino bar going full blast 24/7. The other big rumor is if you don't party your chances of winning are slim. That is the word on the trail and I know most have heard.
Let me ask this question, does a Dale, Wallace, RG and Jonathan really bring in the dancers?
I would think a fair judging pow-wow with a good payout would be the attraction.

Well, rumors will be rumors. LOL Isn't just about every big contest pow wow a party pow wow. This is a Grand Casino pow wow and the bar is 24/7. I have been going there for about 9 years and I have never partied at the bar, but I have placed there several times.
As far as Jonathon, Rg, Wallace and Dale...when you bring in a arena staff that knows people from all tribes and areas, then you will have judges that know the different styles and how they are to be danced. As well as MC's that know the styles and the decorum for the different styles, what songs to ask for, etc. I feel more comfortable with an arena staff who is from different areas of the US and who travel and know the arena than when you come to a pow wow that has local staff. When you have local staff, they are going to pick local judges, therefore you get local winners. How fair is that to the people that have traveled from out of state or from another area of the country to compete?
Not just Jonathon and RG but any arena directors that are knowledgeable of the dances and the arena is a good idea.
That goes for any pow wow, isn't safe to say that when you see a flyer that you will decide whether you want to go to compete by looking at the head staff? That goes for any area of indian country, not just Kinder, but anywhere.
This is a good pow wow and they are very, very hospitable to their guests. To label this pow wow as a party pow wow is not fair because I have been to several pow wows throughout indian country and if you wanted put that sort of label on a pow wow...it could fit anywhere.I am thankful for my grandparents, my parents, my brothers, my aunties and uncles, my children, my companion and all of those who influenced me to be strong and proud of being who I am and where I come from. First of all, congratulations to all the winners. Now my comments on the pow wow. I agree with sltate's comments that "just about every big contest pow wow a party pow wow." But judging from the list of winners at this year's pow wow, I think a majority of them don't party. There might be a "few" who do like to do that sort of thing but I'd say that the party hearty gang weren't there this year (guess they all went to Parker, AZ), just kidding. But I do agree with boiled meat's observation on partying. In the past few years, those that do party have a tendancy to win the top prize. My thinking is that if you have a good head judging staff, they would and should pick judges that don't go out and party. But then it's hard to break the "vicious" cycle (same old judges picking their friends). I'm waiting for the day when judges actually pick dancers on their dancing ability and not by who they know or drink with.
