  • Lost Fan

Greetings everyone...I am in need of your help. I lost my fan at Traders Village Powwow at Grand Prarie, Texas in September of this year. The fan is made with immature golden tail feathers (black tips & speckled underneath). There is no beadwork on the handle but sewn with white leather and several colored threads wrapped on the end of each feather. As with everyone else, my fan is very special to me and has been apart of my spirit from the beginning. IF you know anyone who has found a fan similar to my description, please contact me.

Post a photo of the fan if you've got one. Your written description is like ....a zillion other fans out there!!!!!!

if they're black and whites, you can pretty much forget EVER seeing them again!!

This brings up a good point.

I don't know if folks out there do this or not, but, I've photographed every feather I use or carry, just in case stuff like this happens.

You can get some nice close ups with cameras today, or better yet, lay em on a scanner and scan em, you get a lifesized, or nearly lifesized image of your roach feathers or fan. Mottling on feathers is just like a fingerprint, they're unique and one of a kind...so, it's next to impossible for anyone to have the same markings on their feathers.

I usually keep photos or scans of my feathers in my bag with my permits when I travel.

I know a few folks that lost fans because they we're flat out careless or in a hurry to pack up for whatever reason...some got em back, others lost feathers, bustles, fans and never saw em again!!!

One friend of mine had his mom borrow his fan, she left it on the luggage rack on his ride....she drove home....the fringe snagged onto the rack and she made the 30 minute drive home and found the fan hanging off the roof of her SUV, a bit beat up.......but intact!

    ....damn!!!!! She was lucky!!!!!!

A full set of 12 black and whites mounted into a flat fan......someone was watchin' over dat fan that night!!!!!

I hope you find it! I almost forgot 1 of my fans at our hotel after GON in April, luckily, i took one look around, and that taught me never to put anything on top of a high Tv cabinet

          huh?

How do u lose something THAT precious?...or was it taken?

I agree wit Mr. Bo u can pretty much 4get about it now, its probably done been fixed up ENTIRELY different by now. But then on the other hand its good to keep faith that good things'll happen. Its just in my experience that folks are like big ol vultures when it comes to black tips. So it be a freakin miracle to find someone kind enuff to return it. But good luck!

That's what I was thinking too. Reminds me of life is just getting too complex. I make sure my kids check and double check when we leave for a powwow and when they start taking their regalia off both me and my wife make sure then we get them to double check again. My wife probably spent more than 50-60 hours on each of my children's regalia. We have numerous pictures of them wearing it so I don't think that somebody accidentally taking it though will ever happen. Last year at a powwow where I was at, somebody stole a whole woman's traditional outfit, right down to the Eagle fan. That was harsh. She was heartbroken. Bunch of our friends started helping replace it though. One of my uncles made her a new fan. She was happy.

Hey, it can happen. At least try to have a lil compassion for YOBE. I'm sure most of you lost something very valuable in your lifetime and couldn't get it back.

It's not the same situation, but my eagle fan was taken from me a while back. When I mean taken, it was held up for ransom---either I pay my former roommate for money I supposedly owed her or not get my stuff back. Most of the stuff that were mine were priceless to me, so to have her put a price on my things just didn't sit right with me. I never gave her a dime because in most cultures, you don't pay for exchange of eagle feathers or other valuables for money. I hated to let it go, but I was not about pay up for the reasons above and the fact that I didn't owe her ANY money.

I hope you find your fan, YOBE.

Good words! I'm sorry you lost your fan too. I would be upset if I lost my fan. Your roommate must have been pretty messed up to do something like that. I've had bad experiences with roommates. I've also had a bad experience with losing one of my kids. They are there with you one minute, then the next they are gone. It only takes seconds especially if you are busy trying to do two things at once. Luckily, I found her two aisles down at Wal-mart.

Compassion goes a long way. Have some dignity, Burberrilish. Put yourself in yobe's shoes.

You know if you went to the police she could probably be charged with theft. If you make a good case and these belongings of yours are worth a lot of money, In canada it is theft over $5,000.00. In the U.S. it would probably be classified as a felony. Anyway, try and have your roommate explain this that she was holding your belongings ransom and they may also consider charging her with extortion. Just a thought. Don't lose your rightful possessions because somebody decides they want to be a punk. That's why you should not just let it go. If you do then you let that person win. I know you are supposed to be turning the other cheek and in the end God will take care of it. My answer is God is sometimes busy and needs help. Remember an eye for an eye and all of the other colorful sayings and passages in the bible. Not meaning to sound preachy but damn, people need to have respect for stuff especially for belongings which are sacred or have significant meanings for people.

geeezz why is everyone gettin so bent out of shape lol...everyone needs to chill out...look at reality... the fan is probably long gone by now.. i've lost stuff...but i've always found them..unexpected.. i was always taught to NOT look for anything again if I ever lost it too..... there's a reason why people lose things... items such as these...in my traditional ways..... i've found out that they DO mean something... it may sound silly to some of you...but no need to get bent out of shape ac miss and dnative LOL..i'm just joking around. I feel for people that lose their kids, yeah i have kids and they are young.. but as a parent I would think that you would talk to your kids and remind them everytime to stay by your side..and not wander off..thats what i tell my 5 year old. And they do listen..if you flat out tell them that someone may take them away from you. So chill out LOL :)

also..maybe there is a reason why you lost the fan in the first place too... maybe it was not the right time for you to be responsible for such feathers???? but like dat1 said..its probably said all redone and you wont recognize it. But if you have taken care of that fan..it will come back to you another way... because it will take care of you again. :)

I'm not sure if your comment is directed toward me as it is toward ACMISS, but I want to tell you that people deal with situations in different ways. Your comment didn't help any, I'm sure. I know I haven't posted much but I do read most of the discussions on pws.com. It's easy to recognize people who are friendly, informative, trying to be funny, and some are who downright cynical. For you trying to be funny is not working out especially in some cases such as the lost fan.

You tell me to chill out, well, why don't you try to heed your own advice!

The first fan I'm making is a turkey wing fan. Is there a better way to make the handle than to buy that block of wood from crazy crow?? And how does everyone attach the handle to their wing??...
