      No Powwow this year....

According to the local newspaper, the Casa Grande Dispatch, there won't be a powwow. They are "losing" money on this event. Some of you that know how a powwow should be run, offer your services as a consultant, to show them how its done. They've got the crowds, they just don't know how to do it right.

Again, this one has to do with economics. With a bunch of non-natives planning the entire weekend, they are merely looking for ways to earn a profit. The powwows during this event never got off the ground because not enough coins were made available for the contests and the head staff. At one time, it was something to look forward to every spring. One year, the late actors Iron Eyes Cody and Will Sampson were parade marshalls and both came out to the powwow grounds and sat in with some of the drum groups. That was probably the highlight of all those years when there used to be a powwow.

What can an organizer do when he or she is called at the last hour and told to put on a powwow with only a fistful of dollars?

FREE ADVICE to any powwow committee that hopes to make a profit by sponsoring a contest powwow....

            "It ain't gonna happen."
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

              Play their game.

IF I had the funds, I'd make a deal with them to sponsor the powwow (in full or partial) and get a cut in return. With the crowds that show, there's a good chance to get a profit. Ain't nothing FREE, when you do bidnez w/the white folks. 'Course they probably won't like someone, making a profit off their event. I hear its pretty political and they had some falling out among the committee members in the past few years......But getting in on the front end, with the committee is the only chance of making it work.

"There will be no powwow this year. Ceremonial dancing will be performed during intermissions at the all-Indian rodeo."

Aww man! No powwow this year eh? Haven't been to O'Odham Tash in a loooong time. The last time I went was when Meskwaki Nation showed up and rocked!
