  • Drums that sell CDs at powwows

What is the average price you have seen or bought a cd from a drum at a powwow?

How does that work? I once heard that the record company gives them a bunch of free cds and whatever is sold thru trading posts or online goes to the company. or the company gets a cut.

I try to buy cds straight from the drum if they have any (especially if I tape a few songs), most times they are 15 but lately everyone is chargeing 20. not even a break for buying 2. and some are home made!

    some tps sell for $22!

    Personally speaking.

The CD's I've gotten from drum groups we're just given to me....free of charge, sometimes a few months or weeks before they've even been released commercially.

I like the homemade ones best....get to hear some stuff that's just gettin tried out before it breaks on the powwow trail....pretty keen.

Other times.....I'm just glad I never had to pay for the damn things they're so bad or just lacking in any real "feeling".

That YB Style CD was like that.....one of the singers told me it was just sorta thrown together, done for money rather than as a focus on drawing attention to the actual singing quality of YB.

....his words.....not mine, even they thought the singing stunk on that CD.

When I Do buy....they're around 15. I think the 20 deals are usually being sold by someone trying to get a bit extra on each sale. I know a few stranded friends of mine that sold CD's for drum groups at powwows just to raise some gas money or enough for a plane ticket or bus fare to get home with enough to buy something to eat along the way. Kinda rough....but, it happens I guess.

Average price?? Hmmm...I would have to say the majority of prices for cds cost $15.

Some record companies don't offer free cds to drum groups, but rather a price for each bulk of cds.

Each recording company works differently. Some record companies even work different deals with each drum group. So there is not a standardized practice for "all" recording companies.

I have seen the contracts of three separate recording companies. All three had different provisions in their contracts.

Once each drum group gets their CDs and cassettes to sell on their own, it is up to them on how high they can jack up their overhead prices.

(*short story.... I had my 7 yr old nephew sell cassettes for our drum last year at the Gathering. I told him $15 per CD. He jacked up the price to $18 and was keeping the overhead! I only found out when I saw him arguing with some customer near our drum! He came back to the drum turned in the money and still had two bulging pockets of dollar bills.) True story.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Another thing to is when they have a disclaimer on why their selling CD's a bit much......my boys done that and it was good cause so I willingly paid for it, instead of accepting it as a gift......but like Whome said.....every deal is different.......

Maybe..........I don't remember buying an $18 cd or being asked for that matter. I'm always so busy during both of these powwows. I don't get to get around to talk to folks much or I'm talking to much and I don't get to visit with everyone. Gotta luv'it!!!!!!!!!!

I've sold cd's at powwows, except we had to make some travel money and the guys dished out the songs and recorded them, we sold them for 10 dollars. It was for a good cause.......getting to the next powwow! LOL!! I hardly buy cd's at powwows, I save my money for jewelry!! But some prices are outrageous sometimes, $20, no way.

dang these are some cheap prices must be US dollars there - round these parts its hard to find a new release for under $20 CDN. but there's always someone sellin some golden oldies for 3 for $10/$15 at the pw. that last young scout was sellin for $25 but it was a double cd though.

A lot of the groups selling cd's have two prices. One for Indians and another price. Discriminatory but, hey, thats the way it goes.

Being on the east coast, I have seen my share of strange things at powwows. Since Im a singer, I will focus on THE DRUM.

There are a bunch of strange drums in the east. You know who Im talking about. Those drums that sing and hit the drum but you dont know if its northern or southern....

A LOT of people record audio and/or video at powwows; perhaps mostly for personal use, but we really don't know in all cases where each video is going or if it may appear for sale somewhere. There are some recorders are very obviously commercial; they bought huge $2500 high resolution video cameras...

I was just wondering the other day about powwow groups marketing themselves. I was wondering if any groups or anyone for that matter ever thought about making "mixtapes" like rappers do. Most of the time, specially up here in canada, its so hard to get your fave groups CD..if they have one...

What is everyone's opinion of drum hoppers? I don't like it when they just set in without asking or join in right in the middle of a song. I won't tolerate this with my new drum group. If someone wants to sing with us, I expect them to ask no matter who they are. Don't just come in the middle of...

Lots of good drums have come and gone. Lots of you are singers who have sung with different drum groups.

What are some of the main reasons why you won't sing with a certain drum anymore???
