Powwow organizers will never be able to please everyone.
What powwows have to start asking is that their head judges have no family judging or dancing competition.
When a person is asked to be a head judge, he/she is being honoured for their knowledge of dances, songs and there honesty.
Some head judges these days just have no shame when their family all place, and all family members are utilized in the judging of the competitions.

please reply to this if anyone agree's with me
I totally agree with you on this one, and it's so so true. Powwows always have locals up in there winning some how even tho they shouldn't be. I'd say locals should only dance for fun or don't dance at all at your own or home town powwow, Locals and the commitee should think of there vistors, singers and there spectators that they get every year from all over Indian country, that travel and used quit amount of money to get there. Head Judges, hmmm...Some can be just crocks by picking there relatives to be judges and that's how it just becomes the the Head judges family and friends powwow, that's messed up right thurr and most of tha time when powwows are rigged up is when tha Tabulators are a bunch of cheaters and do what ever they want to those point sheets and all, Get a grip tabulators..LOL, There was this one powwow I really enjoyed and I knew it was going to be fair, was when the Tabulators were White Ladies..I mean no indian in them at all, that's a good idea right there. those tabulators were payed and feed all weekend to do tha points for the powwow committe..Mad props to that powwow commitee for having an Idea like that.

Well I agree with a lot of what has been said. I dont agree that we need white women to judge our dancers - could you just imagine if singers were judged by white guys? These ppl dont know what to look for, or they are likely ndn by injection and will be biased anyway. Also maybe ppl need to get day jobs so that when they travel to these powwows they dont have to worry about winning. But I was talking to a friend this past weekend at the International Peace Powwow and while we were watching from the stands we decided that they should try breaking up the groups of dancers when there are a lot of them out there. I mean you couldnt really judge objectively cuz there were just so many dancers in each category out there. But still I had a great time visiting with friends and family and dancing.....

Native Girl's post did not imply or say "White Folks" judged....? She said they Tabulated......Meaning they processed the score sheets for the Committee.....Which would imply they were not familar with the dancers and could not "cheat" .

Now, now, now. That's stereotyping. How could you tell whether they was Indians or not? I have come to realize that if you make these kinds of assumptions, you are subject to admonishment from other site members. Be very careful.

I am leaning towards your explanation of your observations, but for peacefulness sake, I cannot fully agree with you that those ladies were, indeed, caucasion.

                    seen it all?

                    Boozhoo niji,

I could go on for hours talking about the stuff I have seen at contest pow wows, only trouble is, most of you have probably either heard it or posted it here already anyway.

So I will put in a little positive, upbeat note in here, something I am starting to see as a trend here in Florida, and I hope to continue to see it as well. I have seen this at two pow wows so far this year.

Every dancer has the opprotunity to register and get a number. For every number there is a acompanying ticket dropped in a hat. When we dance, in the intertribals or in catagories where there is a high percentage of registered dancers, the mc will draw a number out of the hat. That dancer, (if he was in the circle for that dance) will get to pick from a stack of envelopes. Inside will be some money or another prize.

At the last pow wow, my number got pulled twice. First time I got $30. Second time I got my choice of coyote hides, and they were real nice hides. Some ofthe other dancers got as much as $100. Its good because it encourages more of the dancers to come out duringthe intertribals. I guess this is good for committees that cannot afford an honorium for each and every dancer.

When we had a little powwow back at home at a lil Lodge powwow..was 300..200..100 in every category, so to make it fair w/ tabulations, they had non-indian white tabulators who could care less..about who was who, cuz they weren't powwow peeps....but that only solves fairness in tabulation..anyway..i think that was a good idea..judges are a whole nother world...one guy said he chooses people from all over, and he knows who is friends with who..so by not picking a whole bunch of friends to judge a category he gets a little bit of fairness...i think sometimes when you dance...it's like aww man that person always hangs with soo and soo....but than again..I know alot of fair powwow peeps who judge based on dancing and respect (meaning they treat others respectfully and dont drink in their outfits and stuff)...but if that makes you not want to dance..than I dont know what to tell you...I was always taught that dancing is a privledge and to be thankful that I have been blessed with the health and ability and all the stuff I have that help me dance..so don't take it for granted..thats why i always say I'll be dancing till I'm old and grey and my legs fall off!!
Nuwa-nu!!..Look at the Yummy Yaha's!!mmmm..mmm Real injun food!!

Not judged, they tabulated..and yes I agree tha powwow committee just wanted to be fair to everyone, so they came up with a plan like that. I wouldn't think it would be a good idea if white people judged our singing and dancing, that's a no no. I'm not stereo typing about anything here, I know better than that..everyone has their own opinion, on what they think. I'm a very traditional person been going to powwows all my life, been taught respect and respect for my culture, Dance and Drum..I didn't mean to offend anyone, or what I have said..

This just might work out for me. Lakota son, could we sit down together and you could help me out with my powwow season schedule this year?
If you know who's going to hit where - lemme know. I'll only go to the ones that you accurately predict I am going to place. If you help me out, I'll slip a few bucks your way. Man, this is going to be a good year for me.!!!!!!!! If you're right, it could be profitable for you too!!!!!!!!

I wonder if folks are familiar with Ronnie Thiesz or Tom T? I've certainly met a number of "White Folks" who have married Indians.....What about their children? These are families who have had an influence on Powwow and are well respected in the arena....Now geneally I understand what folks are saying, but when you stop and think of just how general your comments are it sort of makes you think, now doesn't it? Without a doubt "White Folks" have "gone there" as far as Racism and the list goes on, but just remember your worst enemy is usually right in your own community....And may just be as "Red" as you are.....?
