  • New RED EARTH Powwow director

Jim Anquoe from El Reno, Oklahoma has just been named as the new powwow director for Red Earth.

Jim was one of the first powwow directors of Red Earth and is looking foward to making this year's event "a festival that is inclusive to all."

Jim travelled with his brother Jack representing the drum group "GrayHorse Singers," before forming his own drum group "The Red Stone Singers of Oklahoma." This drum group under Jim's leadership is an invited drum at this year's Gathering of Nations.

Presently Jim is the Director of the Kiowa Museum Committee and has worked closely with the National Museum of the American Indian and the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Powwows.com will be live webcasting this year's Red Earth Festival in Oklahoma City.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

                Red Earth Festival

The Red Earth Festival moved to the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds 3 years ago. There is no longer a parade. They are in two buildings there. The arena for the dance competition and the travel and transportation building for the art/craft exhibit and sales area. There is free parking and places for RV parking at the fairgrounds. Hotels are fairly close to the area.

Too bad they can't change the pow-wow back to second weekend in June. That would be awesome since it now coincides with our tribe's annual pow-wow at the same time. I would've liked to go back to Red Earth.

Yeah, maybe it's not too late to change Red Earth to second weekend since Livingston, Texas (Alabama-Coushatta) powwow is ALWAYS first weekend in June! Haha! Oh well!
Everybody's welcome to come down anyway!

yes, Jim will get it back to what it use to be like. Red Earth has changed, from being one of the biggest and best powwows on the trail.....then here came the circus, with them playing "Kiss" music and having a light show before grand entry!! LOL Come'on now, powwows aren't suppose to have that, its cool when they have the spotlight dance. Plus I judged this past year which was cool, I did like the powwow but I didn't really like the opening part of the grand entry. Hopefully Jim will bring back more of a "traditional" powwow, but that's just my 2 cents. Yeah I can't wait for the powwow to be here, my teacher is the head on the board of directors and was all happy telling us that committee got Ducky to run it again. Hopefully it will have jamming tunes like it was last year too, and yeah Red Stone is going to jam Red Earth once again!!!

Yeah I was wondering who the head staff was too....??
Last year's drums were pretty good ~! Haha, and it was a fun weekend~!
We'll probably go back this year...

                            Red Earth Jim Anquoe

Jim Anquoe Did A Great Job This Year Teaching All Of Us About Keeping Our Traditions And Havin Fun. It Was Great. Areana Directors Were: Graham Pprimeaux, Randy Fraiser, Terry Fillder, Chris Soap, Wade Baker --who Else? The Arena Rocked When Jim Had The Drum Groups Speed It Up For The Powwow.com Contest. I'm Glad There Wasn't Any Fog/smoke For Entry, Etc. He Did A Great Job Keeping It A Place To See Friends, Family, Dance And Win Some Money If You Could/wanted To. We All Know Some Of That Stuff(fog....) Is Upper Mgt. Of Re Not Anquoe Or His Staff. Someone Should Tell Them To Let A Powwow Person Plan All Of The Dance And To Stay Out Of That Side Of It. How About Mountain Soul (canada) They Did A Super Job--good Job Picking Them To Come Ducky. If Red Earth Knows Anything~ducky Will Be Back Next Year Offering The Spots To New Groups And Sharing The Wealth If I Know Him. Black Lodge, Sage Point, Bad Nation, Bad Medicine, Otter Trail--it Was All Great. Someone Told Me He Went Out Of His Way To Take Good Care Of The Drums. I Think I Like Mountain Soul Best. The Parade---hot. Anybody Know Joseph Lufkins (sd) He Was Cool. Also Liked The Chicken Dancers.

                              2. I totally agree.

                              3. I'm a NEW Mountain Soul fan. They crew'd up and brought 15 singers! They are very respectable, friendly and can flat jam!!!

I am saddened deeply to announce that Jim Anquoe Sr (ma cohn) has disassociated himself from the Red Earth Powwow Committee. It's quite ridiculous the extent of some people's need to acquire self-recognition on this level, to ruin a good thing like this annual dance. As far as I know, it's still on....
