  • Gathering

Hello fellow natives, I went to the gathering this year and in my point of view is its a big money scam!!! when you squeeze over 10,000 people in to that tiny building and you are charging $18.00 for two day passes, then you only print enough to allow so many people in for those days....remember this guy knows he wont make any money if he gives out to many 2 day passes, so he sells daily passes for a higher price and says you cant leave or you have to pay again to get in. I think he makes too much money and pays out way to less...this guy has seen he can make alot of money on our culture and traditions and he has a whole year to think of other ways to scam us. I think its to commercial and the pit is to small, its got to be moved or someone else start a new gathering but one that show cases the reason why we have pow-wows the drummers and dancers, and not to make a living on ripping off the pow-wow people.....

    • pow-wownnation.ca

pow-wownnation.ca is a new web-site that is just starting out there on the internet. Its new and it show cases the people of pow-wow, by paying a small fee like $12.00 a year you can send your picture of yourself in your dance outfit, it can be any size, plus a bio of all you past winnings or anything you want people to see and read...if you have any special contacts or your e-mail address to be reached at you can post it too, or you just want people to check out your picture. Drummers it has a page for you as well, send a picture and info to be reached for hosting pow-wows or selling cds. It also has a section for selling regalia, and other native owned businesses......I am joining and I know the person who started the sight and he informed me that every first nation in North America will be recieving info on the sight and it will be getting bigger and better in ht years to come?. Oh yeah they said I can change my picture and bio every month.....I want to support this person because this person is native and this person wants to expose, the pow-wow world how we as pow-wow dancers and singers want it exposed. We send our own pictures and info we want other natives to see...and we help other native businesses get the exposure needed.....and they say better things are in the works for this web-site in the near future.....So I am going to join up and let the pow-wow world see my style.....By the way I think I will boycott Gon until I see some changes...and yes better judging, better prices ,and better accomidations. Because traditional or commercial a pow-wow is ment for the people who participate, and the people who watch not the people who host them, we travel the long hours not them. later.

Speaking of scams, looks like you have your own racket going on too. No one is going to be stupid enough to give you money to post their pic. Like KweZee said, we can do that here for free.

          • fully beaded or cloth

I disagree with the post about the fully beaded over the cloth regalia, especially in reference to NOT voting for a dancer because they don't have fully beaded stuff.
The reason being that in southern fancy...they never wore fully beaded capes and aprons, sidedrops, etc. Only cuffs, headband, halter strips, moccasins. And several of the southern fancy STILL wear this style of regalia in Oklahoma.
So, say you have an excellent southern fancy dancer who knows the songs, has the speed...but is dressed totally southern then you have a dancer who is fully beaded, rhinestoned, and ribboned......you vote for the beaded outfit simply on that principle alone...what about the fact that this IS the original style of regalia? Alot of the "big dogs" still wear cloth capes, etc.
I am thankful for my grandparents, my parents, my brothers, my aunties and uncles, my children, my companion and all of those who influenced me to be strong and proud of being who I am and where I come from. Knowledge is power

Then we should narrow it down to the categories that count the most in regards to beaded regalia.

Men's Northern Traditional, Men's Grass, Men's Northern Fancy, Women's Northern Traditional Buckskin, Women's Northern Traditional Cloth, Women's Southern Buckskin, Women's Fancy Shawl and Women's Jingle.

              • as a friendly gesture...

From one native to another fellow well I think your native Mr. Rick O Shea, I was taught to help my fellow native brother any way I can whether its with food or change or what ever I can we are taught to give. I was approched by this person about his web-sight and I knew they are Native and I will support him because they are Native and I get my picture and bio posted.....and in the end I supported a Native owned and opperated business.....you can spend your $12.00 at Wal-mart.....and next time you want to talk negative about a Native owned business write to your local newspaper....this site is about Native perspectives...oh yeh miss.kwe zee, I know wants to see a Northern style traditional she will be checking the site out.....and save your $12.00 for a bus pass. later

                    • fully beaded over cloth

Well, not exactly just southern....I think Amber Old Horn is a champion northern traditional dancer and she can beat alot of beaded tops, and alot of southern buckskin and cloth when she comes to OK.
Compare some of the original jingle dancers, who have to dance with the comtemporary jingle dancers and they can put up a good contest.
What about Terry Fiddler, JR LaPlante, Wendell Powless, they dress the original traditional Sioux style and they don't have the overloaded beadwork and can compete with the fully, and I mean fully beaded contemp traditional dancers.
What about Gracie HerManyHorses, she doesn't have the fully beaded cape and harness and all the doo-dads hanging of of her, beaded hair ornaments, floaters, ....just one plume in her hair. Yet, she can rock!!
Now, Grass...that is pretty loaded with beadwork..but the old Jonathon WindyBoy and Wade Baker regalias were tough and plain.
Northern Fancy is pretty jazzed up, Have no comment on that one.LOL

Amber Old Horn: Look at her leggings, I bet you that they're beaded. It's that simple. A pair of beaded leggings can make a difference.

Original jingle dancers: Again look at the leggings.

Terry Fiddler, JR Laplante and Wendell Powles: Again the small details matter when it comes to beading.

Gracie Her Many Horses: She always has a fully beaded cape and leggings. I hear she has countless beaded regalias.

Jonathan Windy Boy and Wade Baker: All it takes is the small details such as the beaded harnesses.

So you see, it doesn't take a million strands.

                        • That is true, even the old school southern fancy have beaded harnesses, etc. Small details but beadwork none the less.
But my point is this....the more beadwork does not make the better dancer and when judging..dancing, style and knowledge of song are also very important ingredients in champion dancing. Don't judge a book by it's cover, so to speak....see what it has inside to offer.
As far as Gracie is mentioned, she does have several beaded regalias, but hers are not as "big"(fully beaded harness, wide hairpieces, big barrettes, etc) and yet her style and her regalia are "classic", for lack of a better word.
I realize the styles change with the times, I changed too, but when judging....I look at all the aspects of the dancer before making a decision.

You are correct for looking at the full picture. I must have on my blinders which should be destroyed and done away with, lol.

The Southern Ute Fair Powwow 9/9/05 - 9/11/05, has their catagories broken down like what you have above. As a matter of fact they have it broken down further.
