Controversy At GON???!!!???

They should put Gathering of Nations outside in a WIDE open space out in the middle of that dang big dessert NM has. I also think parents DO need to talk to their kids. I was at a powwow in Grand Ronde last year (i won first in junior girls jingle woohoo!) and this girl in front of me at Grand Entry left as soon as her number was taken! So then a second number taker is walking down the arena, and she comes back! Then, she has her number taken, then she leaves AGAIN! then it happened the next day too. then she placed 3rd!

LOL!!! i know the sound quality must've came out good huh? It was so loud in the Pit.... i gave up trying to answer my phone! *L* I once screamed to my mom.. "I cant hear you, so dont talk! I'll call you later when I get outside!"

cher...yeah we kinda sorta were sittin behind some of them big ole speakers at times we would thunk that the person talking was too "ScREEcHY" LMAO! I guess the recording came out good tho i dunno LOL it was for shanda's brother and some of the other singers

This is insane!

Many years ago, I witnessed a situation on the floor which really made me not to go back again. There was a singer in a wheelchair which the floor security made a big stink about. Ultimately, they made this poor man get out of his wheelchair, have him sit in a regular chair as all the other singers, and fold up/put away his wheelchair.

wow!... there are issues in any huge event such as GON... a couple i was shaken about...
1) no more passes on friday.....wow!..GON should know by now... to have enough 2-day passes.... no excuses!
2) find an indoor football arena... such as the Dome in Flagstaff...!!
3) the sound system was too loud at times and too low at times... i felt sorry for the little ones.. especially the infants and elders... too loud!

yea.... security needs to enroll in "Powwow 101".. being offered at our tribal colleges.

holy crap!! THAT'S the biggest public sporting arena in the whole alb. area?!? too sad..but then again i come from the land of "the huge hockey arenas" and like everyone (well almost every city round here) has one. the pit is mostly for basketball, huh? can fit like two b-ball courts on it (hockey rink)...then there's like two tiers of seating and PUBLIC elevators depending on the sink of building you might have.

security sounded pretty rough - talk about a human rights violation there - GET OUT OF YOUR WHEELCHAIR AND SIT IN THE HARD PLASTIC CHAIR WITH NO ARM RESTS!!!

maybe GON should move around the country to different cities every year in bigger venues- hosted in-by different nations areas....

I agree about the security. They were my biggest problem as well. So I was by one of the exit ways and an old-timer was standing outside one of the doors. He knocked on the door, and as any good person would do, I opened it for him and he hobbled in. So this security guy ran over and started chewing me out and telling the old man that he had to go back out and walk around to the other side of the building. I told him to back off and let the old man come inside. He said I can't let any old person in and the old man had to leave. So the old man put his hand on the guy's shoulder and told him he had to respect his elders as I had done by letting him in. He said he didn't care who he was and he had to leave and come in another door. So that's when I really started sticking up for the guy and yelling at the guard. He said it was his job to keep "just anyone" from coming back through the exit. I told him to go do his job some where else and leave the old-timer alone. Interesting, the door had one of those blue handicapped stickers on it. The guard didn't seem to care. But the old man got through and walked inside. It was way too much drama for something that shouldn't have happened.


And as far as winners, I heard that Derrick picked a lot of judges who were students in the NDN student organization and didn't even know anything about powwows. So that's why a bunch of younger, good looking guys won that totally didn't dance the right way to the songs, but looked nicer than the real champions. Who knows... like others have been saying, new winners pop up all the time.

Congrats to everyone!!!!

I saw someone in northern men's fancy drop a big articles of his outfit and then pick it up and then continue to dance. What is your thoughts about drop articles of your regalia. Should you disqualify yourself or let the judges decide??? I was just wondering. Also I missed the grass dance special and a lot of people were booing when the winner was annouced. I asked someone behind me who watched the copmetition and they said that Julius should have won it. Any thoughts???? I just like to stir the pot a lil. When I started the thread I wasn't implying that there was a controversy.....I was just saying that a lot of us see things different ways. That is all. Well people keep that drama and controversy coming....we got a whole 360 days til the next Gatherings.

When Darryl "OG" Goodwill won the special over Julius and the crowd started booing.....that was totally uncalled for.....I felt really bad for my bro out there in the spotlight getting booed like that....I would not be surprised if he decides not to come back for next year.......

The Pit is too small for the pow-wow. Ask Dazzle, I told her I wouldn't be there long cuz there is too many people for me. Feels like the walls are closing on me, LOL. Is the Pit bigger than Tingley? I think if the weather is nice, they should plan to have it outside...maybe if the Isotopes are on away games, they could have it there. *shrugs* Next year, I'll go to the pow-wow and just sit next to Dazzle! LOL
