  • Updated Red Earth info

Just spoke with a Red Earth representative on the phone....No age group splits this year in the dance categories(how sad.....), No singing contests, drums are as follows:
    Mountain Soul
    Blacklodge
    Bad Nation
    Sage Point
    Southern Boys
    OtterTrail
    Bad Medicine
    Ft. Oakland Ramblers

I like these drums but I wish yellowhammer and mesquakie nation were invited, they jammed last year, as did southern thunder. I guess all new drums this year?
I am thankful for my grandparents, my parents, my brothers, my aunties and uncles, my children, my companion and all of those who influenced me to be strong and proud of being who I am and where I come from. Knowledge is power

    SLT,

So how is this going to work? Are golden agers going to compete against Juniors?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Sorry, pow wow people, didn't clarify myself....the past two years they have split the age group categories..20-34 and 35-54 and 55 and over. This year the adults is 18-54 and 55 and over. So "no age group splits" was referring to adult categories. No one would combine tiny tots with golden age. LOL
        6-12 jrs.
        13-17 teens
        18-54 adults
        55 and over golden age.

As much as Blacklodge travels and considering their home Yakama Valley reaches into the 100's in the summer, I don't think them boyz should have too much trouble with it.

we met up with them that one year for red earth (like 10 years ago - my partner used to sing with them.) they were just about killed by the humidity ... the yakama valley is more of a "dry" heat ... lol.

when i tell ppl round here about that okla heat - they don't really "understand" the magnitude of the heat down south ... i equate it with being in a sauna .. lol .. and it cools down to our mid day heat at night. they're like "nooo way!!"

Yep, need a good drum contest to bring some more drums in. I like the drums that are invited, but man...there is nothing like Mesquakie Nation, Iron Boy, Battle River, Bear Creek, The Boyz...the drums they have had in the past. I guess they are trying to bring in different drums besides those they have had in the past few years, but like I said, those were good line ups too. The pow wow is all about the drums.

Who's going to Red Earth? Are you contesting or just going to watch?

I'll be in the parade Friday Morning. But a little while after that I'll be leaving going to another powwow.

It's usually the most watched webcast...

What's your thoughts on Red Earth? How has it changed over the 20 years its been goin on? I heard someone say that they didin't like it since it didn't give any money back to NDN community. Do any of the big ones? What about Gathering of the Nations? Do they give back to NDN community? :confus...
