Indians are the most colorful people in the world. I love to see Native people marry other Native people, but I never batted an eyelash when my sisters married non-native men, as long as my nephews know who they are.

German-Indian, Irish-Indian, French-Indian, Black-Indian, Chinese-Indian, Welsh-Indian, Hawaiian-Indian, ... I have met all of these and there must be even more. "Not-Indian-enough", "Rugged Indian", "Rez Indian", "Urban Indian", "American Indian", "Canadian First Nation". Let's give up arguing over who is what and start celebrating what we are.

One thing that never made sense to me growing up in the area I did, was---it seemed to be more acceptible to be native with white blood, than to be native with ANY black blood. I hate the fact that my family and other families from my area would buy into the racism of the white people in the area; when our family was looked down upon almost just as much, as blacks, and definately 2nd class citizens. Even up here in Alaska; my husbands relations have problems with blacks, but are more accepting to whites, guess they watch too much TV or something...

        Well here we are again.

First of all, Zerro, you are the man!!! Great replies.

Billy Joe Jimbob, you have obviously not been to the east coast! You would not believe how many "full bloods" who have that Holier than thou attitude.

I know this is a hard subject, especally because I myself walk in these shoes.

Besides all that I do go through, one of my pet pives is the fact that mixed white girls are better accepted as having indian ancestry. I was told that it's becasue some of the "indian community" find it hard to believe that full bloods would mix with Africans. I hate to be negitive but it is true. I can't say everywhere, but it is alive and well in the south. Everytime I go to a powwow, I want to have a small history lesson, lets say between 1800 and 1830ish?

On the positive side, what makes all of what I endure worth while is the feeling that I get when I hear those drums! The feeling when I dance in time with the drum feels so good that nothing else matters. The good feeling I have when I sing these old songs that I hope some of my ansestors where able to sing.
Yes, it makes the hurt and pain worth it, if not just for a while. This is the road that I'm walking ,and I thank God for the opportunity to pass our culture along to my children ,and other young ones like me as well. I hope that God keeps me strong enough so I can maybe make this road easier to walk for them.
Thank you for letting me tell my small side of this story!

RAINBOW - I just didnt mention the full bloods because the thread was about "black indians". I know a few full bloods in the area, some are ok and some arent. They have that "IM THE ONLY FULL BLOOD IN THE AREA, YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME" attitude. Most of the time I would rather listen to them.

well my son is a "Black Indian" and so far i think he is pretty neat, why is there something i should know about is he going to morph into something unrecognizable(sp) OMG i am so angered by your ignorant question i could just spit i do not even know what to say. there have been some good points made here thank you Candae and Billy Bob, and Mato for encouraging everyone who is open minded. there are many who see Indians mixed with black as less then, i will never understand this thought process. i had to take a breath and edit my post, because my words were harsher then they needed to be i think but i had to keep this last thing in.....
i think we need a thread called

Indians that ask ignorant questions....what do you think about them?

How exactly does one determine that someone is a "black Indian" anyways? Just because someone appears to look a certain way does not indicate their race. My good friend is very dark and is always correcting people who try to one-drop her into the "african-american" category. What she do, get a badge that indicates her race? LOL

Yeah, I heard of him. Met him online. But dude, does that mean that one person, Jerry Eagle Feather cancels out the Indian blood in all redblack (a term I coined myself, you may use it for a fee) mixedbloods??????

Did Jerry Monroe (his real name) steal my Indin Blood? Dangit, that [email protected]*#$%@^ I'm have to skin his hide for making me a fake just because one person thinks he is.

Have I been discriminated against? Once or twice. Have I been accepted by Indians most everywhere? Well, does California, Texas and Oklahoma count?

Am I embarrassed by folks like Eaglefeather? Yes. I try to educate but often times am ignored.

Do I get annoyed when Indians with less blood and blue eyes try to card me? uh, yes.

Do I get annoyed when fullbloods card me? sometimes, but doesn't happen too often.

Do I notice that redblack mixedbloods get singled out more than other mixedbloods? Sure, you know, all folks claiming Apache aren't really Apache......... (algunos cruzaron la fronterra y dice que son Indios.....)

Does the initial question in this thread sew division? Sure does!

K we've seen arguments about "white who think they're NDN's" and just plain NDN's who look "too white". Now we got the (replace white with black) argument on. When's it gonna stop? Did someone already ask what we all think of "Asian Indians" yet?

First of all... yeah what she ^Homa said. Girl as always eloquence personified.

Second..... Yeah JD!!!! lol I could tell ya stories. hahahaha If you've ever seen Blazing saddles, it's the part where the Black sheriff rides up and the celebration is SHUT DOWWWWWN! I've had that happen one time. A few other times I was a lil too dark for some peoples taste. Hey they like chocolate candy what's wrong with chocolate people? I've gotten looks and I'm sure I'm talked about but as long as I continue to carry myself the way my parents raised me... I'm good.

Third.... Migiziwomen I had to take a moment too. :-| And Candace, girl.... dang goot points.

You know what I am just going to stop while I am ahead. I so hope I did not offened anybody. And in no way was I trying to say that just because someone apperears dark you can tell what race they are. What I should have used instead of black indian is african-native american. Again I hope I did not offend anyone.

I'm sure some would be offended anytime a race question is brought up.

The question I'm asking is....... will there ever be a time when people won't hate other people? Is it going to be a fact that has been there from the beginning until the end?

In my years I've seen things swing and sway from one extreme to the other. Whites hating blacks........we had the klan. Blacks hating whites...... Black Panthers. Indian hating who ever was not Indian because they had no right to be on this land.

On the flip side I've seen tree huggin "the world is a rainbow tribe" to people who saw everyone as having no color but were otherwise thought of being transparent. And in the process humanity loses all the variety spice and flavor. Life just becomes a bland oatmeal instead of the flavorful pot of wonderful stew.

All of these are extremes. And I wonder where is the common ground? Where is that place where people can co exist and not hate?

My goodness, how mean, people cant help what they are, or their bloodline, and it is not right to be mean to someone just because of their skin or hair, come on people, we need to remember that we need to treat everyone like we would like to be treated, and if someone is mixed it is not their fault, hell we cant pick our parents or family!
