  • Powwow Language 101

"I say tomatos. You say tamahtoes."-unknown author.

Many times people use terms that apply to their own lifes experiences but sound "odd" when describing powwow terms, especially to people who have been powwowing all their lives.

Recently during lunch, I have been trying to teach a guy to sing powwow songs. Today he said, "he forgot his beater but still wanted to play." I laughed and told him the beaters are called "drumsticks" and playing a drum is called "singing."

With this said, "We can all use an education on learning different ways to communicate powwow language."

Let's see how some same subjects are said by different powwow people.

    1. Modern Powwows - Wacipis, Contest Powwows, Fair Powwows, College powwows, Homecomings, Expositions, Festivals, Tribal Celebrations, Memorials, and Benefits.

    2. Traditional Powwows - Pau-waus, Wacipis, Hot dance, Kettle dance, Helushkas, Doings, Dances, Good tymes, Tribal celebrations, Non-contest powwows, Gatherings and Ceremonial powwows.

    3. Indian dance outfits: Riggings, Regalia, Outfits, Gear, Indian Cloths, Powwow stuff, Dresses (Jingle, Buckskin, Cloth) and yes, even "Costumes" by the old tymers.

Is there other ways to describe these? If so please post.

I have been trying to educate people entering the circle and those who have no knowledge about powwows. Many times these people use terms that apply to their own lifes experiences but sound "odd" when describing powwow terms.

            1. Powwow -
i have heard " family dance"

                              How about:

                              Wardance?

                              What do you call it?

What do people in your area call it?

Does anybody in your area still do war dances related to the warrior culture of your tribe?

I often talk to people who wish to learn more about powwows.

One quote I use is, "Where ever there are pockets of Indians, there are powwows. Powwows are held in all 50 states."

I know not every Indian powwows and there are many Indians who do not go to powwows...

I can’t exactly explain why I like to powwow so much. Call it an addiction I’m a fiend for, as I search for the next biggest and best powwow to hit. Call it an itch I can’t scratch, no matter how hard I try. Powwows are like the boyfriend I may...
