  • Establishing Political Correctness

In an attempt to learn as much as I can, I have been asking questions, writing down information and interviewing knowledgable individuals.

It seems a lot of elders still use the word "costume" to describe what their people wore at powwows, celebrations and even ceremony!

How do you tell an elder "They're not COSTUMES, they are supposed to be called REGALIA or DANCE OUTFITS?"

Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Yes.....I'd like to know, too. I saw you put "aka costumes" in the other post and I gasped. (lol)

Well, you don't tell them anything...you listen. I've been saying on this site for several years now that the word costume is used by a LOT of older people. My sharing that knowledge has been met by a lot of disdain and I believe disbelief. Those of you who haven't heard this obviously haven't traveled much...or you haven't listened much.

I still say it's freakin' hilarious hearing people argue over English words. If you want to be technical and all politically correct, then call these items what they're called in each of our languages. Otherwise, quit griping.
I think everyone on this rez is addicted to Harry Potter...lol...

Thank you!! When I was young and listening I always heard it described as "Costume." I have shared that a few times and pretty much got the same response.

I think people get sensitive because they need to feel like they know something and are defending something. I myself like to think that I learn things, my daughters gramma calls them costumes, and if I am not mistaken and please correct me if I am wrong, but the lakota words generaly translated, don't they mean costume? not sure but kinda sure, lol. I used to get upset when I would here that, but then I gots me some of that edumacation.

hey stacey, are you stalking WHOME? There are laws about that, and if you get yourself locked up or your azz kicked by his wife how are we going to go light up the night?

I think it has to do with the fact that:
#1) many Elders speak english as a second language and #2)also because of boarding school where Elders endured schooling with harshness and fear of all the abuse and trauma.

Their vocabulary may not be as expansive as many of the younger people who likely have been taught english as a first language and also have been able to receive schooling in more positive (hopefully) sitautions then the Elders experienced.

Oh and please continue stalking Whome - your comments are very good.

My uncle (1 in particular) went to FSIS...and he went through the same thing everyone else went through, but he stilll finds it in his self to speak the language, grow his hair out, sing and dance..well not really dance much...still goes to meetings. Although, our elders still remember the time they spent with the schools, it dosen't seem to effect them in any other areas, such as heritage and religous ceremonies. I believe some select elders, don't value these regalias as they may not be traditional to their tribe. I think they'd rather see their family participate in more traditional dances, rather then contemporary powwow. Ofcourse this varies by tribes.

and don't let whome fool you...he likes your attention...keep stalking him, he might catch you AND his wife at the same time......

then again you could get caught..

if not...take off to canada...they'll neva find you

LOL..........are we back to this topic again???

politically correctness........they are clothes.... simple as that clothes.

I could really care less what they are called. Same as our Navajo tradish dresses, etc, they are all clothes. Some peeps call them 'costumes' but they are just clothes all dressed up.

Add a lil beadwork here, concho belt there, bells, what not, its all just clothes. We just either make it all ourselves or add 'accessories' ........its all relative.....clothes.

Back in the day....its also what our ancestors wore, deerskin, etc just to keep warm, clothes..........

My mom always wears her 'costume' every day, velvateen shirt, squash blossoms, etc even to herd sheep, just because its not something a average person where's everyday or its bought at Macy's does not make it a 'costume'.

                              okay..........enuff said...... hahaha.....back to work

Oh yeah, i'd never correct an elder........out of respect. Just smile and nod your head....
You have crossed my path, You will never be forgotten......
