Colourful powwow dazzles spectators; Native dancers bring thousands to
                    Ohsweken

                    Heather Ibbotson / expositor staff
                    Local News - Monday, July 30, 2007 @ 07:00

A dazzling display of colour greeted weekend visitors to the Grand River
Champion of Champions Powwow as native dancers from across Ontario and beyond
donned their finest regalia for two days of competition and fellowship.

The annual event attracted thousands of visitors to the Chiefswood Tent and
                    Trailer Park.

On Saturday, the afternoon air was thick with the heavy beating of drums and
lilting song to which dancers swayed and stomped in a seeming random but
                    measured rhythm.

Fancy feather dancers swooped and twirled and became blurs of brightness,
their bodies lost behind wild whirls of feathers, ribbons and tassels.

Women performed the jingle dance at a more sedate and solemn pace. The aptly
called jingle dresses are bedecked with hundreds of small tin cones and
dancers move amid a constant musical tinkling.

The regalia of male traditional dancers is focused more on beadwork and
                    traditional motifs.

Ron Mercier, 63, of Regina, said he was happy to find himself in the area
this weekend and glad that he "just happened to have" his regalia with him.

As a first-time participant at the Grand River Powwow, Mercier said he was
impressed by the crowds of spectators.

"We don't get this many onlookers in Saskatchewan," he said, scanning the
packed bleachers surrounding the dance field.

Mercier, a schoolteacher, was a latecomer to traditional native dancing,
having only taken up the art in his early 40s.

"I didn't have much to do with my culture till about 25 years ago," he said.
"But it was in my blood." He had native grandparents who lived in the
                    Sudbury area.

He said he was inspired to take up traditional dancing after attending a
powwow in western Canada. Mercier said that at the time he was unsure if there
was some initiation involved or special training needed, so he approached an
elder and told the man he wanted to take up dancing but didn't know how.

"Just do it," the elder told him.

Mercier took the advice and hasn't looked back. His regalia, most of which
is his own handiwork, expresses more of a Western native influence but does
pay respect to eastern Ojibwa beadwork tradition. Tyrone Shawana, 19, of
Manitoulin Island, took advantage of a few moments to relax in the shade before
venturing onto the sun-soaked dance field.

Ablaze in a rainbow of hues from his multi-coloured feathered headdress to
his beaded mocassins, Shawana's specialty is the men's fancy feather dance.

He said this was his fourth year at the Six Nations event and described the
Grand River Powwow as "one of the better ones" he has attended.

Sheranne McNaughton, 26, of Six Nations, caught the eye and ear of visitors
as she passed by in her jingle dress, boasting 365 tin cones, one for each
                    day in the year.

"I can't sneak up on anyone," she said.

Sheranne attended the powwow in her regalia even though she did not plan to
                    enter any competitions this year.

"I just like dancing for the fun of it," she said.

Apart from the dancing, there was a host of other attractions to keep
                    visitors engaged.

A mini-village of native arts and crafts vendors offered a wealth of
traditional and traditional-based wares, including braided sweet grass, leather
mocassins, bead jewelry, soapstone sculptures, feathered knickknacks and
                    nature-inspired fragrant soaps.

A host of food vendors offered the standard choices of hot dogs and fries,
along with a variety of specialized selections such as fried bread, moose
burgers and lemonade made from fresh squeezed lemons.

For anyone seeking an international flair, there was even some traditionally
native fare teamed with Asian cuisine in the form of venison stir fry with
                    rice.

Fancy feather dancers swooped and twirled and became blurs of
brightness, their bodies lost behind wild whirls of feathers, ribbons and
                      tassels.

Native dancers from across the province converged on Six Nations for the
