    I don't know what Ms49_Queen is referring to (ASU) ... certainly not the Arizona State University powwow, maybe another organization using the same acronym.

      What I don't understand are:

      Did people get paid with the faulty results?

      Or are people still waiting to find out how they placed and get paid with the final results?

      It would be tough to demote a first place winner and to try to get back the award money for first place if he or she was in third place after the final tabulation.

      It's best for the committee to admit their shortcomings and lack of experience and move on, but they need to address this issue and correct it before next year's event.

        I think it would be really something if someone were to actually turn the money back in if they found out they didn't actually win. AMAZING actually.

        I don't think Sycuan expects that and so they are paying twice for their tabulation errors.
        The only time its too late to start dancing is when you're dead.

          Don't know what the big deal is about tabulating, let's say there are 5 places:

          First = 10 points
          Second = 8 points
          Third = 6 points
          Fourth = 4
          Fifth = 2 points
          Add them up at the end of each session or go round. You don't need any computer or spreadsheet just a general ledger.
          All contest ballots are signed off and once this is recorded in the ledger, then one fo the committee person can or totally rely on the tabulators and sign off.

          If awarding Grand Entry points then you add that into another column. Each column will be separate by each session. EXAMPLE: Session 1 = Friday evening, Session 2 = Saturday afternoon and so on.

          I would add this to Grand Entry's 30 points or whatever it is for being in full dress and hair braided...none of this hurry hurry crud. Or men dancers coming in without their roaches if half assed dress then you will get 15 points for making the GE but not the full amunt of points. I throw this in there BECAUSE where I am from when our peeps dressed us out for the first time, they had everything in Tack! and told us to enter each arena the same way.

          I have spoken..............

            Maybe it's time to go back to the good old fashioned pencil and paper, 3 (or 5) judges, 1 contest, no point system, no computers, no scanners, 1 warm up, 1 contest song, judge and be done with it. End of story. When you start having contests every session and points and spot checks it can get confusing not to mention tiresome and yes.........boring!
            And yes I was also at ASU and yes they did screw up their tabulations, called out winners that didn't win....then the ones that came back up the 2nd time they called them up had to give back their envelopes w/money and the real winners got the loot! The mistaken winners ended up with nothing but a red face! Embarrassing for ASU but they're just students, what can you expect?

              Well ... at least it didn't take several days to sort it all out.

                  Then maybe it shouldn't be a contest powwow.

                  Why must I feel like that..why must I chase the cat?

                    Tabulators

                    YOU KNOWW ONE FAMILY IS IN CHARGE OF THIS POWWOW AND BEEN RUNNING THIS POW-WOW F0R YEARS. THESE PEOPLE ARE THEE TABULATORS, THEY REGISTER PEOPLE, THEY TAKE THE NUMBERS AT GRAND ENTRY, THEY SOMETIMES JUDGE AND THEY PICK THE HEAD STAFF. ONE OF THE TABULATORS/REGISTER/JUDGE/NUMBER TAKER AT G.E. AND EXHIBITION POINTS IS MISS REZRATZ UP ABOVE. I GUESS SHES MULTI TALENTED LMAO.
                    IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE A CONTEST POWWOW MAKE IT FAIR BECAUSE PEOPLE COME ALONG WAY TO CONTEST. CONTEST POWWOWS MEANS YOU WIN MONEY IN THE END AND OF COURSE YOU HAVE FUN THE WHOLE TIME!! JUST MAKE IT A TRADITIONAL POWWOW IF YOU CANT UNDERSTAND THAT. OR HIRE DIFFERENT PEOPLE FOR THE DIFFERENT JOBS AND ADMIT TO YOUR MISTAKES AND HAVE AN APOLOGY. INSTEAD OF MS. ATTITUDE.

                      So my point was/is that this pow wow seems to have been plagued with issues regarding tabulation-every year. Yes, people still go-but with Navajo Nation fair and So. Ute happening the same weekend-people have a choice and I bet some people didn't go back to Sycuan this year.
                      I was NOT self promoting the business that Ryan and I run, I was stating that EVERY YEAR, dancers and singers ask us why we don't tabulate Sycuan-because of problems like this. We have sent tabulation proposals to the committee, we have called and offered our services-heck, one year we even had a tribal member come up to us after Morongo and give us the Tribal Chairperson's phone number to call and ask if we could tabulate Sycuan-due to these kind of problems. And of course we called and were told the same thing-it's handled by casino staff. I told Ryan that we should offer to tabulate the whole thing for free just ONCE alongside the "casino staff/current tabulators" and see what kind of results we get. As long as they give us access to the ballots, we can take our own grand entry numbers. That might be interesting...

                      Thankfully there are public forums that exist such as this one, where people can post their honest opinions and the truth can be said about what really happens at pow wows.

                        I appreciate that the committee is trying to correct their mistakes and make sure everyone who placed is recognized. But honestly does it take this long? Almost week?

                        My sincere suggestion to this committee, please consider getting help with tabulating. It can be anyone. You can call some of the other powwows to see who would be willing to help.

                              that would be interesting - sounds like a good idea, crossing my fingers that it can happen next year!

                                  I was looking at the schedule posted online at the Ft.McDowell Casino website last night and it says that each group of dancers will have winners announced right after their group contests.
                                  So Friday night-Golden Age contests, winners announced and they're done. Saturday night-Adult women, both...

                                  I'll start out by saying the usual things were good about this powwow: the drums and the dancers. It's them that ultimately make or break a powwow, for the most part. There were some really great specials and the dancers really put up a good competition. The weather was mild, and it was not unbearably...
