I'm not gonna complain or whine around about how I was cheated, they didn't tabulate right....blah blah blah. I just didn't win. Now if I find out that something went wrong with the tabulations, am I gonna keep calling and calling to try to find out if I really did win? NO. That's just showing no class. I figure if I did win SOMEONE from the committee will notify me or send me a check at some point, after all they have all my information, so if I don't get either then I guess I didn't win! Oh well!! I'm not so vain, as some are, to think that I was one of the best dancers there so I should've won something and if I didn't then I'm gonna cry around about it. That's just the chance you take when you travel to these powwows. Don't count your chickens before they hatch!
I dislike the "PAYCHECK" analogy. I go to powwow because I WANT to, because I LOVE to dance...not because I NEED to or HAVE to. If I place, RIGHT ON! I have some extra cash in my pocket and I'll take whoever I'm traveling with out to eat like a fat-girl. lol. If I don't win...OH EFF'in WELL! lol. "OWED MONEY" for dancing at a powwow, golly...that's just terrible sounding. The only time I'm owed money is when I clock in and clock out.Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE A CONTEST POWWOW MAKE IT FAIR BECAUSE PEOPLE COME ALONG WAY TO CONTEST. CONTEST POWWOWS MEANS YOU WIN MONEY IN THE END AND OF COURSE YOU HAVE FUN THE WHOLE TIME!! JUST MAKE IT A TRADITIONAL POWWOW IF YOU CANT UNDERSTAND THAT. OR HIRE DIFFERENT PEOPLE FOR THE DIFFERENT JOBS AND ADMIT TO YOUR MISTAKES AND HAVE AN APOLOGY. INSTEAD OF MS. ATTITUDE.

I happen to agree wholeheartedly with superndngyrl...if people won and are owed money, it's not greedy or childish for them to try to collect. If you were shorted hours on your paycheck, you'd sure complain to the HR department or whoever to get that straightened out wouldn't you? If the IRS shorted you, you'd certainly call them. So, why can't pow wow people do the same?

Hmmmmmmm, anyone want some popcorn???
LOL. Well I was suppose to go to this powwow but ended up sick at home instead.. Yeah know there are some good powwows and some bad powwows. There are powwows who pay and powwows that don't. There are committee's who stand by their word and there are those who don't. Having known some of these Cali powwows and who/what runs them, not all are alike. Now, I can say, having been on the Southern Cali Powwow Circuit Council from the 1st time it was organized, yes, I was one of the members back in 2000 or was it 1999. Anyhow, after being at many meetings with ALL the S. Cali Casino's, I can say, first hand, that alot of these committee's, Casino's, etc had no first hand knowledge of how to run powwows or even what they were about. I am not going to name names but some of the dancers, etc helped collaborate some of the powwows today and helped the tribes make them what they are. Without this outside help or knowledge, some of these Casino powwows would not have made it. I even remember Morongo having very little dancers and only maybe 10 drums show up, at most. Now the thing I remember most that was difficult was having all these committee's with so many different types of views or misunderstanding of how these powwows should be run. I am reminding you all that most of these tribes are mostly familiar with stick games and birdsinging, not powwows, especially big time powwows. Yes, Sycuan and Pechanga have been around a while, yet we ask, why are they continuing to be the same or have the same problems. As a business entrepeneur primarily dealing with tribes and tribal councils, it has come to a point that its really hard to train old dogs with new tricks. Not saying they are dogs but some of these people only want to go with what is comfortable or only what they know. It's hard for these councils to accept change or invest in things they don't know about. So I have seen it first hand, its hard for some of these tribes to change what they may think is best even though it may not be. Trust is the key issue here. So yes, we can say, the Rumley crew or hiring so and so may be the best options. But when it comes down to it, getting the committee or even the council to change an 'old habit' is going to be the key. Do you know how long it took Morongo to finally get a hotel on their property?? I remember when it was just an idea. I am glad to see powwows like San Manuel make it, thanks to a great committee and people like Tommy staying with it for 9 years now. At least the committee at Sycuan is dealing with their issue now, even if its a week later. From what it looks like, they're paying out twice, which is much better than having to just say 'oh well, live with it'. I have seen much worse when the committee's don't even payout and someone stole the prize money or hearing of dancers waiting days for their IOU's that never get paid out. I even forked out over 4000.00 in airline tickets to a committee for a host drum and didn't get paid for it until a year or two later. So, in all, yes its bad the tabulations got screwed up, the committee admitted it, they are fixing it, let's just move on to the next powwow. Personally, yeah, I would like to go back to Sycuan one day, but its only because we like to dance. If one of places, great, if we don't, oh well, at least we had fun dancing. Isn't that what powwows are suppose to be about? Anyhow, just remember maybe some of these Casino Powwows may never change, its up to the committee or the councils. Just know that if you go, keep an open mind, have fun dancing/singing, and just enjoy yourself.

Get some help!!!!! Ryan OR Denver??? IDK
Originally posted by skybird5 View PostSo my point was/is that this pow wow seems to have been plagued with issues regarding tabulation-every year. Yes, people still go-but with Navajo Nation fair and So. Ute happening the same weekend-people have a choice and I bet some people didn't go back to Sycuan this year.
I was NOT self promoting the business that Ryan and I run, I was stating that EVERY YEAR, dancers and singers ask us why we don't tabulate Sycuan-because of problems like this. We have sent tabulation proposals to the committee, we have called and offered our services-heck, one year we even had a tribal member come up to us after Morongo and give us the Tribal Chairperson's phone number to call and ask if we could tabulate Sycuan-due to these kind of problems. And of course we called and were told the same thing-it's handled by casino staff. I told Ryan that we should offer to tabulate the whole thing for free just ONCE alongside the "casino staff/current tabulators" and see what kind of results we get. As long as they give us access to the ballots, we can take our own grand entry numbers. That might be interesting...
Thankfully there are public forums that exist such as this one, where people can post their honest opinions and the truth can be said about what really happens at pow wows.

I agree! 100%

Rumley and Crew (are human and have made human errors, that they are quick to review and fix) The Denver March crew, me just someone that knows what they are doing. People invest lots of $ to travel.
I know that the Sycuan People want the best for their guests (I attended their First Pow wow and for several years after) they are extremely hospitable.
But why not get someone in there that can get it right the first time around, they do waste money paying for the errors. etc

by skybird5I was looking at the schedule posted online at the Ft.McDowell Casino website last night and it says that each group of dancers will have winners announced right after their group contests.
So Friday night-Golden Age contests, winners announced and they're done. Saturday night-Adult women, both...-

by WindjammerCongrats to all the winners at Schemitzun this year, dancing and singing in all that heat and humidity you all deserve it. This was actually my first time going back in quite a while and I must say that I was disappointed with the overall atmosphere and tempo of the pow wow. For one thing, Schemitzun...

by CelenaI'll start out by saying the usual things were good about this powwow: the drums and the dancers. It's them that ultimately make or break a powwow, for the most part. There were some really great specials and the dancers really put up a good competition. The weather was mild, and it was not unbearably...
