If you are OK with Boy Scouts and hobbyists powwowing, do you think they ought to try to be authentic with their outfits and dancing, or do you think they should try to keep themselves distinct? I don't mean Scouts should dance in their uniforms or hobbs in 3-piece suits (though that would be interesting), but I can see how people could see it either way, that they should try to be accurate or that they should not try to be exact since they're not tribal members. What do you think?

Do you think hobbs should NOT be authentic?

on the one hand, when hobbyists come out looking all weird with ducks on their heads and some wierd bobcat fur strapped to their backside, it just makes me want to cover my eyes.
But then when they come out and blend in wearing my tribal designs its like huh? Especially when its nicer than what I got. I get all envious. ayyeee
But I guess I honestly think they should put the time in creating something really nice and that they can be proud of in the arena. It would be better if hobbyists find a real hobby instead of playing indian cuz its offensive but if you're gonna do it then do it right. This doesn't mean i'm giving my permission... just my two cents. ;)
I don't want to hear of any hobbyists going around saying well superndngyrl said... ayeThe only time its too late to start dancing is when you're dead.

I've been to some traditional powwows where there were some hobbyists, and their outfits were downright scary - mixed up, synthetic, nothing I would feel envious of.
I guess I'd like to see hobbyists at least put something together that does look authentic, but not too tribe specific. I know I wouldn't want to wear something of another tribe for fear of offending someone - I'd think they'd be even more offended if a non-NDN did it.

Im like this if your going to dance do it rite and dont look like a side show freak. Ive help'd non ndn's look good with out useing a design from any tribe, meaning they get out paper noodle out something thats all their own and go from there. As for the scouts im a proud MaMa of two scouts . They always ask me in a kind way what to do and what not to do so not to offend. My sons friends have came to pow-wow's and were really into everything they saw.I got a fevah! And the only cure is more cowbell!!!

i guess it should be looked at as flattering that they want to imitate our culture & dances....i agree w/Super...you should always be respectful & do things right.
If you're going to put the time & effort into creating an outfit & learning how to dance, then make it worthy of yourself.
Bright crazy feathers & colorful buckskins will definitely give you the wrong attention....not to mention most natives enjoy putting hobbs in their place when twirling wildly in their skunk fur pouches & snake skin hair ties.*BE EASY*

On the left side of the page for the User Control panel, click on the "Edit Options" button.
On the Edit Options page that comes up look under the first section (Login and Privacy). The first check box is "Use InvisibleMode". Just click it to uncheck it. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "Save Changes" button.

by NDNGurl92782I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers by doing this, I just want people's opinion.... What do you guys think about dancers that only go to pow wows to dance what they need to dance.Such as only dancing their contest song and one grand entry and place? There are good dancers out here and most know...

by OLChemistThis is probably mildly inflammatory, however I must ask. It seems that every other non-Indian person that approaches a Native, introduces themselves with some variation of: "I'm not an Indian but I feel in my heart I'm connected."
Why do people do this? I don't introduce myself...-
