  • old skool fancy

I've seen a few comments about this in other threads and I wanna find this out for myself also..what is old skool fancy...properly that is. now I'm kinda a young buck still in my late 20's but what I remember from seeing ol skool mens fancy was that they didnt do all the flippin n stuff they do now. They were all about foot work and it was all about keeping time with the beat as well. I also remember that the men didnt twirl like dudes do now..all the time...they still did it..yes, but, they added moves to it..adding foot work with there every move.
I also remember that the bustles were flat, guys wore harnesses and used a fan and a stick. I know men down south still use the fan, but up north you dont see it to often anymore. I also remember the shaggs were HUUUUUUUUGE and fat..nowadays there alot smaller.
Now for the women..I tend to see this catagory more then the men. I mean I dont know it all, and not trying to, but I'd honestly say that 80% dont do it right at all. Some women I see wear there shawl like a trad dancer over there arm, some I see in buckskin outfits, and the shawl thing, and others I see dancing jingle dress steps...what the heck?
what I remember from the early 80's ...prolly not considered old skool..but non-the-less, women were more gracefull and had waaaaaay more footwork then nowadays and the speggetti stringed, plain shawls and fat hair ties and otter or weasel skin ties. or mink. they feet were lower to the ground, they didnt kick there feet up or high step it like women do now, and like the men, didnt twirl around as much..it was all about the foot work.
Old skool ladies to me that still dance that style would be Gracie Her Many horses, Irene Oakes..just to name a few..

please correct me if I'm wrong..would love to hear feedback cause a skin wants to know......

I'm in my middle 40's and your recollection of old school fancy men is what I remember too. Beaded harnesses, belts, cuffs, flatter bustles, not as much stuff hanging off of them either. I think that the guys down south had a very "clean" look to them meaning that it was like the beadwork, the bustles, the goats and bells, the roach, the fan and wand, the apron and shirt or yoke and that was all. When things are that clean, you have to show off your footwork! The guys up north used a lot more fringe and other things hanging on them to make them flow more. I think they had it easier as they probably didn't have to work quite as hard to still get a good look going. I know a couple of guys who still do it the old school way and I think that they're fun to watch. No flat footed steps when they're dancing hard, all on the balls of the their feet. Lots of tapping, short spins, little bit of arm work and of course the roach feathers a'rockin. It would be good to hear what others have to say.
"It doesn't really matter, they don't know any better anyway."

This is a great thread. I don;t know much about it but my granddad was an "old skool" fancy dancer. I mean real old skool. He's in his 80's now. I will have to ask him and get some information and bring it back. This really perks my interest now. I'd love to find some pics of him too...(If there are any)...I'll get back to this thread when I have some more info. But thanks for the posting it's a great way for me to get some info even about my own family.

that would be awesome if you could get some pics. My pops too dibbled n dabbled as a facny dancer back in the early 70's and I seen a pic too..the flat bustles, harness and I forgot to mention that not alot of them had arm bustles as well. I tease my pops about that pic and he tells me that there was a time back then when being a fancy dancer was "IT"..it was the fad at the time.

There is a definite difference between old skool northern and old skool southern.

Men's fancy dance in the south began and evolved at least 40-50 years before it was introduced to the north.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Does anyone else work where you have to deal with vandalism?

Kids hit 4 of our parks/schools this weekend. At one place they took bolt cutters and cut the fence apart. Then put up boards so they could skateboard. Hello...where were the parents when their kids were gone that long?...

              Boozhoo niji,

I have had something happen in the last couple of days that is really interesting, and I just wanted to get some input on it. It is certainly important in my life, but its not a Native issue, because of my mixed heritage.

The other day I get a phone call...

Hello, was at chamber's farm last night for a so called pow-wow.
In my opinion, they needed to call it a white man trying to have a Native American gathering. sevral of the dancers were walking across the circle with food and drinks, just so they didn't have to go around the circle. they had people...

How do we teach our children
              by crazywolf
              Boozhoo niji,

Something happened today that I got a little upset about, because of how it is how ignorance and racism is spread.

Today at work I was fixing a lawnmower it was hoisted up by a engine lift, and some children came in with their father. While he was wheeling...
