Anyone going to the Choctaw Pow-wow in Durant, OK?

The contrast and difference between Southern (Oklahoma) powwow and Northern (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) powwows is as different as night and day.

It all boils down to what you are used to.

In these provinces they announce winners between 1am and 5am on Monday morning. You often have to travel more than 6 hours to attend the next powwow. There are 3-day powwows in the middle of the week. If you are competing you normally dance to 3 songs each of the 5 sessions.

This is quite different from Oklahoma powwows where a late powwow lasts until 1am on Monday morning, a 6 hour drive is done only seldomly and most powwows begin the contest portion of the powwow at 7 or 8pm. In most Oklahoma powwows, you only have to dance to two songs.

Is up north where kids contest in their categories starting at 8:00pm?lol I was up in the northwest this one time. Took a nap from 9:30 to 11:00pm. When I woke up, they were just starting to contest adults. That's powwow!!!

Does anyone have the rest of the winners list. Not the whiners, but the winners in the Sr. adult catagories?
This powwow could be good for two days. It's hard trying to squeeze all that that went on in a one day powwow.
I also suggest seprate catagories in the Drum contest. Northern and Southern divisions and drum split for the remaining drums. Singers need to eat and sleep, too.
Anyway I had a good time, even tho I slept in a car on Friday nite. See you at the next doings.

This powwow reminded me of a three day powwow that was crammed into one longgg day.

I guess we are a bit spoiled here in Oklahoma, since we live in OKC a 3 hour drive will pretty much put us into any powwow in the State.
On a weekend in the summer you can pick and choose where you want to go and usually have more than one to choose from!!!


So some suggestions for next year would be:
Make it a 2 day powwow or reduce the number of Groups
Sat and Sun
Done by 5 on Sunday

If only a one Day Powwow
Then only have Teen, Adult and Golden age Groups
We had Tiny Tots,JR,Teen, JR Adult,Senior Adult and Golden Age

Fix the Tabulations

If your running late keep the Vendors open

Can't hurt to ask

go the a pow wow that starts at 7 pm friday and ends at 2 am .. 1 pm and 7 pm grand entries on sat and sun and typically ends 2 am on saturday too .. and ends 6:00 am on sunday. 39 hours of dancing/intertribaling/singing/waiting/watching time ... and NOT even including time for setting up camp, cooking, time tryin to sleep, breaking down camp ... getting ready. or time to get there and get home ...

didnt like how long it was taking? go home then .. thats what i do. simple as that .. some pow wow committees learn from their mistakes some dont (case in point kehewin first nation pow wow that regularly goes until after 6 am monday every single year, i dont go to that one LOL .. some ppl do and learn to sleep in their cars dressed in their regalia waiting for their contest or they take turns sleeping so no one misses a song or their contest). im sure micheal and the rest of that pow wow committee will be learning from this years issues and can almost guarantee that it wont be like that next year.

i have gone to many a pow wow in oklahoma (used to live in apache) .. in my opinion many of the pws in the state are what many in this (west central canada) region would consider .. a "mini-pow wow" (one day .. a couple drums .. small amount of dancers put on by either a school or a group of ppl from an area (that brings up another issue out here - relatively unknown group of ppl = dont have their prize money LOL) .. day pay or "special contests" sponsored by some outside company or family with relatively small payouts).

"oklahoma ppl are spoiled" .. 3 hours to drive to a pw thats nothing in our books. and its only in this region that you hear about the rule "must be in regalia to receive prize money" .. which is prolly why most ppl from the state or surrounding areas stay dressed until the end of the pow wow when they go to other pws in different parts of the country.

this pow wow is relatively "new" isnt it? didnt hear about it until micheal gave us flyers and invited us down for it (long drive for us ... 2 days LOL). but it had damn good prize money for a one day .. $60 000 total payout right? so you must really think to yourself ... it could be worse the next time you're sitting there after a one day pow wow thats ending at 2 am LOL

I had a really good time at this powwow and being a dancer who has done alot of traveling.....well...it goes with the territory. I was glad they had age-group splits...I will travel to any pow wow that accommodates the dancers with this consideration. I think that is just awesome.
The ties, etc....thats pow wow life and it comes with the territory. I had fun, I was tired, but it was one day. I have danced 4 days, two grand entrys per day, til who knows when in the morning...lol. And loved it anyways.Two summers ago I pow wowed for 19 consecutive days, came home, had a peyote meeting at my home and then slept for 4 days... so this one day was not so bad. LOL

Championship JACKETS!!!!

Hate to revive an old thread that needed to die, but I just had to post that I got my championship jacket in the mail today from this powwow and it is COOL!!!!!!! Lol...it looks just like a Haskell letterman's jacket...hahaha. It's purple wool with yellow/gold leather sleeves, and my name and category embroidered on it. They told us when we were leaving that we would be getting a jacket sent to us, but I forgot all about it...lol. So Thank You powwow committee! (see, I'm being nice now...heehee!).
