Keep havin' bad luck down there, but I got friends there and I'm always treated good. The Saponis are good hosts. It's the towns close to them that I wonder about. My suggestion...stay OUT of Roanoke Rapids (we got our rental totalled by a drunk driver while it was parked at a gas station and then couldn't get a rental back home from racist gas station/rental car business...had to take the train)...Get your rooms in Rocky Mount.

The pow-wow..good times....

Gonna have to come back and "exorcise" those demons that seem to wanna haunt me in that area...

If you want directions - check this out...

If you are coming from Richmond area, get off at Exit 160 in NC - follow that road until it ends - 561, then turn left and follow the signs.

If you are coming from Pembroke area, get off Exit 141 (Red Oak), turn left off exit ramp, keep coming til you see signs.

No matter which way you are coming from - try to come at least one day - you will not regret it...

I finally got back to my room from the pow-wow grounds - for those of u that have never experienced Hollister - you have surely missed an awesome adventure. It was a full moon tonight, and seeing the bonfire which is lit each Friday night of the pow-wow in the middle of the dance arena and watching all the young babies, and our lovely Indian people from all Nations coming here to celebrate with our families - well, it is breathtaking. The weather was incredible - just beautiful. If you have not made up your mind yet to come - what ya waiting on cuz??? It is so awesome for me - seeing all my peeps - by blood and by love - I know I am at home.

There are about 8-10 drums here from all over - more dancers than I ever seen on a Friday night - my family is getting ready for my cousins special tomorrow and my twin Leah blessed me with a shirt in honor of my baby cousin Johnny who was taken from us earlier this year - but pow-wows are where we heal and love and breathe. And it is an outdoor pow-wow - so that in itself is liberating....

Anyways - need to get some zzz's to see my peeps again tomorrow - love to you all and come on down...

Another Successful Powwow

Thanks to all of you that came to the 43rd Annual Haliwa-Saponi Powwow. The powwow was a huge success and the weather held off until the very end; just in time. Thanks to all of the dancers that came to support the event, especially the fancy dancers that participated in the Johnny Hedgepeth Memorial Moccasin Blowout dance contest. It was awesome to see those guys out there kickin' it. The first place winner in women's fancy was Katy Isinock (sp?).

Congratulations to Red Earth on their first big drum contest win. I am so proud, I feel like I and the rest of Stoney Creek are their big brothers. Thanks to the the other drums that came out, Kau Ta Noh, Jrs. Hope you guys had a good time in Hollister, after years of not coming up. Also thanks to Southern Eagle, you guys sounded great, Red Oak, thanks for setting up, and Southern Sun for serving as Southern Host this year.

Look for bigger and better things next year, we'll start planning for next year in a few weeks.

Just heard some sad news...

One of the vendors that was at the pow-wow this past weekend - Mr. James Locklear, was found dead this morning, they think of natural causes. Mr. James was an assistant principal at Purnell Swett, and during the weekend, travelled the circuit. I just saw him on Sat at this booth with his brother, I believe that was his bro, looked just like him.

Please all say a prayer for Mr. James - he was a good man. I spoke on a few occasions when my daughter was in school, and he was always a real good decent man to my family.
