  • Why...

    Hello,

I do this topic to show you who I really am.
Lots of people here don’t know me, that’s why they don’t understand me, so after having ridden these few lines, you can judge me rightly.

Who I am : My name is Valerie, I’m 30 years old, I’m married and have a 2 years old daughter. I live in France.

Why and how I dance : I dance fancy shawl and jingle dress dance for 8 years. I dance to pray, I dance to share and for people who can dance any more! Powwows dancing has become a “way of life” for me, even if I can’t dance every week end as you can do: I learn that powwows are not just dances or contests, great outfits and appearance, but it’s a real way of life, with a big “family”, friends, relatives, prayers, sharing and help.

Dancing in France : In France their isn’t any powwows so we just dance in shows, where we show your dances to white people. We don’t have any drummer so we use powwows music on CD: We can’t do an others way.

My outfit : I did my outfit myself, I don’t bought it ! (with a little help for the sewing): I did it in 1 year, because I work on my job every days, and I have a 2 years old daughter we have to look after. I bead my powwows set myself in 9 months and half and I can say how much it’s hard!

Your advices : I would like to thank you for all your advices you gave me. I hear it and I understand the way I must follow to come into the circle properly, but unfortunately, it’s hard to do all I have to: I live in France, so it cost lots of money to travel in the US and learn with natives people. But I want to follow the “powwows way”, and I want to do the best as I can. I know I need to learn very much. I try to do it with my Indians friends and relatives thank to the Internet. Every one who want to teach me is welcome.

Your anger : I understand your anger against white people who don’t have respected the “protocol” and who dance at your powwows. White people did too much your people to suffer, but some of you have white people among their ancestors, and white blood in their veins. I know that some of you ashamed of that, that’s why some of you don’t want white people do your dances and dance at your powwows.
You don’t want white people to dance your dances and do powwows, because it’s YOUR traditions, YOUR culture and YOUR dances, but all of you live in a house, drink wine, go to the church, bring their children to school: These things are white people traditions and culture.
Some of you, will tell me that your people have to incorporated the white people culture and traditions to avoid the death, but now, in 2008, you also live in the white people traditions and culture.
I do you some excuses me for all “my ancestors” have done to your ancestors, sincerely, but it doesn’t change the history, and come back all Indian people who have been unjustly slaughtered. I so have wanted that the history have been different, but the real nature and stupidity off some people (white, red, Yellow or black) are stronger than my best wish.

Playing Indian : Like you, I ‘m bored when I see white people who “plays Indians” without knowing your culture and tradition: Just for the show. I’m the first white people here who want to say them to learn correctly before to show your culture and traditions, but some time, even if you learn people correctly, they do what they want after. When I see white people playing Indians, I’m ashamed of my own people !!!
I know I’m not and Indian and I will never be and Indian ! I think that I can imagine what your people feel because Indian people were not welcomed on their own land. I’ve been abandoned by my biologic mother, and even if it was for good reasons, I know what you feel when you’re not welcomed and you are an alien here.

My mail box : You may be ask yourself why my mail box is named “[email protected]”. It’s because of the film “Lakotamoon” with Rodney A. Grant. I like very much this film, that’s why I decided to name my mail box “lakotamoon8”: (The 8 is my day and month of birthday.)

My pseudonym : You may be ask yourself why my pseudonym is “Full moon night” : I take this pseudo like I could take an other like : “dog ****”, but I found that “Full moon night” was better ! This pseudo is not an Indian name. It’s stupid for my people (white people) to give them selves Indian name: My French name is Valerie !

Why I go to Nestlé Waters Powwow : Coming here, I don’t want to do “war” ! I just want to learn and share with native people (and others people) who can learn and teach me more than I know.

I hope you have ridden this topic to the end, so now, you can judge me objectively.
I know I will not pleased by every one because every one has his own tastes.
To finish, I know that even we are white, red, yellow or black people, we are bones of each others bones, we are blood of each others blood. As a French singer of them said : “When black people died, his bones are the same color of white people”.

    Thank you.

    Val,
Here's the thing. There is just A LOT you don't know.
This coming from someone who doesn't know a lot either.
I'll tell you what everyone is always telling me. It is not about you.
Please understand I say this with respect for you.
Personally I admire your determination but it is not about me either.

      Full,

I think by coming on here and sharing your beliefs, you may have painted a target on yourself.

      Do you know what a
      dogpile" is?

I'm sorry but I don't know what is a "dogpile" and if it's to insult me, I don't want to know what it is.
I know I will not change your mind.
To funniest is that if I 'd lied about my race, you do'd never look that I am not Indian, and all would be ok.
        Thank you.

Before you jump to conclusions, first listen to what WhoMe says. He is respected not only here but in the powwow community. He can give insight in the most bleekest moments. Let him first explain what a "dogpile" is and then you can run with it. I have known Whome for a couple of years now and he is very knowledgable.

            Full,

I know you are probably defensive at this point, but I was not trying to insult you. I know you have good intentions.

My message was more of a warning.

Since this thread is about you and written by you, I think you can expect both negative and positive comments about you result.

Hmmmm... well these are pretty big assumptions ... not all of us have white blood in our veins (lucky guys anyway) but those of who do aren't "ashamed" of it we're just NOT proud of it. lol (my kola's n i see a difference between the two) I grew up on the reservation, yet went to Highschool in a border town. What i seen of hte wasicu's (whites) wasn't anything to be proud of and i was so thankful n proud i was oglala Lakota after those 4 years!
I don't care if wasicu's dance at our pow-wows... but i do question WHY!

so this is the part that gets me... i don't think u understand our "anger"... thats' appearent but i understand that you don't understand so i'm going to say this as str8 fwd as possible.... that all of us live in a house, drink wine, go to church and take our children to school.is crazy...and a HUGE assuption to me a "tipi" is a home and a place of dwelling... so yes i still live in an evolved TIPI! lol... do i drink wine? hell no i don't! n neither do alot of my frinds!! we dont drink any type of alcohol (anymore) period! and as for going 2 church... We only went when i had 2 as a student at a catholic school...and it was forced upon us! (and it still is mind you and this is 2008) I attend inipi (sweat) n pray the way i'm taught n what's right in my cante!!
our children learn more from us at home than they ever could in school! n we are FORCED to send them to schools or else we go to jail... you make it sound like it's a choice?? i would much rather my children spent the days w/ there grandparents n great grandparents learning from them (cuz tunkas knows i was the one who taught them 2 read n their math) n there REAL learning comes from our elders.

i think assume u made lots of assumptions :D (n u know what they say when you do that!)
anyway... hope you have a good day

                  A few questions:

Regardless of what you say on here or what we reply, you're still going to live by what you understand as the "powwow way of life" so what exactly are you trying to achieve by writing this thread about yourself?

So because you feel you've learned about our cultures and traditions you aren't playing Indian in France?

                  My thoughts:

Your remarks about us practicing white people traditions and culture by living in houses, taking our children to school and going to church is just pure ignorant. Natives have always had our own houses, schools and "churches", your people simply came along and labeled them.
The societies and communities of the world have evolved into and have created what is todays "standards of living".
Unless you've done research and can prove that everything invented that we use today has come strictly from white people and that the entire world has adopted these things and are practicing these "culture and traditions" you shouldn't make rediculous generalizations about how we live.

Don't take this as an insult, I just don't agree with the basis of your argument.

Why are you wanting acceptance? It seems you are going to go on doing the things you want to do anyway.

You may have good intentions, but the way you did it doesn't sit too well with most natives. The fact that you learned all these ways from a book or videos just doesn't cut it. Not everyone can do that. There are more things and ways to learn that don't come in publications.

                        lol..
I just had to write and say tat i"m glad this lady has come on and shared a little about what she is doing..
I've found europeans to be very respectful and knowledgable about us native americans.. more so then ur typical redneck
I think that if she finds happiness doing what she is doing.. what is the harm?? at least someone is dancing "our" way.. I dont see that too often on my travels to powwows.. I see a lot of native youth involved in other things that are not "ours" so I wonder if the people who are putting down this lady and what she is doing because they are afraid of saying anything to those youths they see on their own res' everyday?? and feel guilty or ashamed? I know I find it sad that our youth know more about the latest hip hop song then the latest song or an old song from one of the many drums around..
I just say that she said that she dances for others and I've been taught that is what dancing and singing are for.. and i"ll stand by that until the day I can't dance anymore..
