I would just like to invite everyone out to the Meherrin Powwow this October 24-26 2008. This year the host drum is Stoney Creek from Hollister, NC. Head Dancers are Keith Anderson and Tonia Jacobs. Please see the powwow calendar for more information. It is located in Ahoskie, NC on Hwy 11 (between Ahoskie and Murfreesboro). We are bringing back competition this year. In adult categories, there split categories for Northern and Southern. There are 3 places dancers and drum competition.
The Meherrin Tribe is working real hard this year to put on a good powwow. The theme this year is Honoring Our Artists. Andrew Hunter will be honored at this powwow. I invite everyone to come and support his family as we do this honoring. Andrew spent his life as Meherrin advocate and proved to be an awesome artist. I know he has touched a lot of people's lives and I for one miss him.
I hate to have to put this in, but sometimes the hand is forced. There is a document circulating stating that the powwow has been canceled. The document goes on encouraging people not to attend. While no one in the Meherrin Tribe can force anyone to do anything or not do anything; the Meherrin Tribe would love to have your presence at this year's event. The powwow is happening and we are going to have a good time amongst ourselves and with those who attend.
I look forward to seeing you the 4th weekend in October in Ahoskie! This is our 20th Anniversary and we are trying to make it real special!
