By all means in the USA watch for those durn rules!
Up here I have the guys from the Minsitry looking me over once in a while , one actually got sick to the stomach as he stirred the pail of soup and when I told him what he was stirring he ran for the washroom!
The guys up here actually deliver to me, they see the respect that I give to each piece and see that it isn't wasted. So get in touch with DOT too, they pick up the road kills and have a dumping ground of their own, tooooo much is wasted in there and can still be recycled!
As per selling to the white folks, that doesn't stop a bad dude from selling on ebay, just look back at the elderly drunk in Vancouver that shot eagles to support his drinking, after 40 or so eagles they caught him and asked him to stop. They never punished him.

When was this? I live in the area. Was that the big story that was on the news?

As for contacting the highway crews that is an idea. But then again I always make my trip up north in the summer time where you are legally allowed to scavenge for feathers at the local landfill

Hey everybody -- can anyone tell me the best way to clean some pretty, body fluid smeared feathers? And how can I clean the sweat out of others that get stuck to my face dancin'? Thanks a bunch for any suggestions.

I will look into that information soon. I have my permits for my eagle feathers, but do not have one for the hawk feathers. Thanks again for your help. I am far away from home, however I work for the Army Corp of Engineers and we have a regulatory dept so I will get started from there

get a permit

even with your tribal card you still need a permit or permits-
What you need is going to depend on where you live and what you are keeping. There are federal laws involved and sometimes state laws too.
Also you might have to let fish and game look at it first- sometimes they go after power companies and such for too many birds getting KFC'd by the wires, and they check for that avian flu and west nile.
If you live near your rez you could probably ask your tribal conservation/fish and game folks to get started.

I know this system sucks, but it is supposed to keep people from huntin' the birds and then sellin' the parts off to white folks.

That is good advice. Now I have a question about roadkill. I find dead hawks on the side of the road all the time. I have taken 2 cleaned the feathers and buried the remains. Is that legal?.....Yes I am native.

SO Two Horses, road kill eh!!!

Are you talking road kill that resembles pizza in the format you found it!???
Okay take a pail one of the biggest one you can get and toss the remains in, then add hot water and a good long squirt of dish soap. Let them soak till the gore comes off. Even in a real bad pizza where you think nothing is savable, you may get the surprize of your life, you should be able to save more than 90.0 % of the feathers. Presoak so that the meat falls off the feathers and sinks to the bottom of the pail.

After soaking I run the tap and hold them by the quill tip and let the water run down the lenght of the feather to its tip till the water looks clear, so that there is no soap residue.
Then I lay them side by side on paper towels. Since you are talkng a massive amount of feathers forget the blow dryer, just leave them on the paper towel till they are dry. Ususally overnight will do.

Once they are dry, slowly fluff them back to life, you will be
amazed at how they fan out once more and come back to life.

I have been doing this to feathers where the owners were about to toss them! Their eyes popped and they now do that as well. I have a few feathers that are more than 25 years old and they look brand spanking new!

Have fun and pick up those nasty road kill pizzas!!! LOL!!

Hi there, im assuming yout talking about bird poo? I clean poo off with dish soap then I use a hair dryr, that method should work for sweat as well..
