  • Singers FYI- NABI Chasing The Sun Pow Wow, May 1-3, 2009.

Just in case some of you groups were planning to set up at this pow wow in Phoenix, AZ., the official word is that there is no drum contest NOR are they paying any day money. Visiting drums are welcome, but that's what they are not going to be doing at this pow wow.

Just an FYI, not a complaint.

It's especially/mainly for those who may have been planning to stick around after Gatherings, or were planning to travel from aways to sing here. They are going to pay only their host drums (and I assume the two invited as well).

I emailed this guy from their website: [email protected] , and he was quick with the reply. Thanks man!

I live in PHX and I'm not even going to this event. HAHAHA. I've lived here long enough to know that it's still HOT in May, and yeah it may be a nice stadium for FOOTBALL, but I'm not sure it's great for a pow wow. It's also really far away from Mesa where I live. Am going to UCLA to support my friends singing there.

Yes, UCLA is farther but it's not like I'd have to drive back and forth 3 times just to participate.

The American Indian Student Association has a really nice powwow on the UCLA campus the first weekend in May, every year for the past, um this is the 24th year actually. It's Saturday and Sunday-Chris Dinehdeal is head southern singer and Midnite Express is host northern drum.

at least we don't have to hear about all the negativity and who could do it better at this powwow......just powwow!!!....feel bad for the UCLA committee though....

Loads of Goot Singing by the Hosts......

Since when does it have to be a drum contest or day money to be a legit powwow? Show up and show out , Bro!

I didn't say it wasn't a legit pow wow because of that. Re-read: 'twas just a courtesy-FYI from one singer to another/ for some of those groups who might be a long way from their home States/Provinces, not just the surrounding SW, who may've decided to stick around in the region after Gatherings, specifically assuming there to be a drum contest. It could've been more than disappointing for some. Having been in that situation before, I thought it a logical inquiry. Having that kind of info./ heads up in the past would've been helpful to, and way, way appreciated by us when we were on the road in past years.

Because of the amounts in prize money in the dances, it's an easy/understandable assumption on some group's part that there was going to be a singing contest too (even though, yes, that it isn't advertised.)

                            ABC. 123.

Anyway to the groups who benefited from the info. I'm glad to have helped. It sounds like it's going to be a good pow wow and am sure there will be other groups showing up to jam with the hosts/invited.

Well if you want to come this event then come on over sit up and sing out. There are plenty of powwows going on. There's UCLA that's going on the sametime maybe that's the place you ought to go to if interested in singing in the drum contest and have a blast while you at it. Singing is supposed to be just that singing if the flier doesn't have drum contest posted well that's what it is non drum contest powwow. If you want to attend this event well attend and have a good attitude about and quit worrying about if your going to get day money or having a drum contest. Be appreciative that the gift you possess in singing and go and sing for the people and above all the Good God Almighty Himself. Haw!

Anyone have any info (directions, MC, drums, etc.) on this? I saw a vendor's application for this on Saturday. I heard they're also having Yaqui deer dancers. Sounds interesting. I heard that's some pretty wild stuff.
