  • Swine Flu at powwows

I was planning on going to New York City this week. Because there is a National Health warning issued for the number of cases that are documented there, I am now not going.

This is something that will definitely affect powwows in the near future.

As this epidemic continues to spread, how will this effect your decision to attend powwows in the areas where the swine flu is present?

Would you subject yourself or your family, drum group, or the group you travel with to the possibllity of picking up this type of flu at a powwow?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Here is an interactive map showing the outbreaks world wide.

RSOE EDIS - Pandemic Monitoring System

Its scary to think that someone was effected while at GoN last week and gave it to others. It would have a great effect on natives all over N America.

the flu strain is a combination of pig, bird and human viruses that humans may have no natural immunity to.

          Who Me.....

Saddle up that Horse and head to the Big City.......Haka!

I find this interesting.....there are 20 Million! 20 Million people living in Mexico City. The recognized point of origin.....About 100 or so have died from the illness.....Not good if 1 person died, but only time will tell how widespread it is.....As far as NYC, well Saint Francis Prep students carried it back from Mexico .....Hopefully it will be contained? Now there's always my perspective.....Theres something else going on......

            This is kinda scary
And i dont like to say this but its practiacally inevitable
Modern man has done away with so many things detremental to them. Making predators nearly extinct, medicine and hospitals, lack of heavy warfare (i know we loose many soldiers all the time but not like in WWI, WWII etc...)

The world is quite overpopulated and nature will find ways to deal with issues at hand.

Funny how it is the germs that harm humans the most, when we are the most harmful parasite on the planet.
Yah win some yah loose some.

Its these times i am semi-thankful for having no children as i think i would be in much more panic mode

The concern with this flu (which they are now terming the North American Influenza) is that it, as was mentioned in a previous post, has components of human, avian, and swine flu. At this time, there is no vaccine available although it does respond to early treatment with anti-virals. Initial indications were that it was contracted by people who had traveled to Mexico, but we are seeing the potiental human-to-human transmission to people who have not traveled to that area. With the increasing number of international cases, and the global nature of our world today, there is concern that this could rapidly spread.

Fortunately, the cases in the US have been mild and there have been no deaths reported in the US. Once concern from Mexico is that those who have died as a result of this outbreak are in an age category not typically effected by flu-related deaths (ages 25-50 instead of the "expected range" of the very young and very old).

WhoMe's question is timely as I had the same thought while preparing to go to a dance this weekend. Things to remember are to wash your hands, if you think you have the flu or other respiratory illness you need to stay home, and avoid contact with individuals who may have traveled into Mexico within the past one to two weeks.

Keep your fingers crossed and have fun out there.

The person-to-person contact is what has the CDC worried, and in those cases limiting contact in large groups (schools, workplaces, churches) can certainly help in reducing the spread. I guess if a powwow was located in an area where there were already confirmed cases I would think the event would be cancelled anyway. Of course, until a case is identified you don't have that kind of direction.

I've been sick since Sunday, and woke up this morning feeling awful. Even though I haven't traveled or been around anyone who has traveled to any of these areas where the disease has been identified, I still went and got checked out. Thankfully it's just a plain old ordinary bacterial upper respiratory infection. (Still feel like crap, though).

I did hear on the news that they have 3 people in the Milwaukee area that are being tested (they have symptoms and apparently have had a travel risk) - 2 in Elmbrook and 1 in Greenfield. They should know in a few days if it's swine flu or not.

                    North,

This is kinda what I'm getting at.

If a powwow is not cancelled and takes place where there are already confirmed cases ....

... I would hate to be the one who contacted it, and brought it back to my community.

Me too. And as a mom I especially wouldn't want little ones exposed to it - my kids or anyone else's.

I just heard on the news that there is 100 confirmed cases in NY now.
They are say this virus has a 6 to 7 day incubation period.
I hope everyone stays safe out there in powwow country. Please.
