  • Miss Indian World Refund

Did anybody else pre-pay for the Miss Indian World pageant and then have their tickets sold out from under them?

I've been trying to find out about a refund to no avail.

Geez, I don't even know who won!?!?!

7 times I trekked to GON......

On 1 trek....In 2000 my Mom went for the first time......She was really interested in the pageant so we all headed over to check it out. Well we got lost...LOL! Sound familar? By the time we got to the pageant it was standing room only and they were winding down.....That was sort of a drag, but things turned out pretty good....I introduced my Mom to the Matthews family and making small talk we laughed about what had happenned. So what does Melanie do.....She gives my Mom, and 2 Aunts GON Hoodies, as well some t-shirts. Now she certainly didn't have to do that, but she did.....So when I read this and that about the Matthews family, how "money hungry" they are and so on....I know thats not the truth....

That was certainly a good year cause Lillian Sparks won MIW (another reason Mom wanted to see the pagaent). Our families have always been close....Her Mama is my Auntie G!

I encourage folks to post good experiences, cause you sure know someone is bound to post a negative one.....Funny enough the negative ones don't hold too much water.....
"She also has a very soft skin. The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She say's she doesn't. That's why I call her "Doesn't Like Horses". But, of course, she's lying."

I'm trying my hardest not to post a lot of negativity about Gathering....just trying to find out how I get my refund. I was so psyched to go, but it was just the first of a long line of disappointments on this trip.

This was my first and last time at Gathering. I'm sure lots of peeps are used to it all, but it just isn't for me. It really is a WOW POW. Hopefully it will get better being out of the Pit next year and maybe they won't move back!!

I actually didn't mind paying scads for the tickets and we found free parking a short hike away, but after paying that, walking around for hours and finding NO SEATS available ANYWHERE - we left.

The whole trip wasn't a bust though. I was very impressed with Sandia Casino (and their buffet). Did I mention $20 free play? It's as nice as any Las Vegas casino.

The Pueblo Indian Center had an EXCELLENT lunch and cool (free) museum. The Albuquerque flea market was the BOMB!! We bought all our gifts there, along with pinons, jerky, and I got a good stew pot for a steal!

Old town is very cool, and we supported the local native traders there as well. We had to hassle with our motel to get the discount we were promised, but it worked out in the end.

We stocked up on chiles in Hatch, had some great New Mexico cuisine in Las Vegas, NM at the Mexican Kitchen de los Aragon, and met a lot of the NICEST people down there.

We got our tickets in advance the year Cepa (Lillian Sparks) gave up her crown. We stood in a long line to get in but then Cepa came up in a limo and carried us in with her. She calls my mom "grandma" so we were with the family.

                That's cool.

After multiple emails to GON, I did get an email back from the guy that confirmed my ticket purchase, that they will be giving refund and to be patient.

good to hear you'll be getting a refund! but sorry you were unable to see the event and much of the powwow. (at least you can check out the contests online and of course view plenty of pix). i missed out on gatherings this year - the first time in i dunno how long...

what i love about going to gatherings every year is doing everything else you mentioned above - it makes the trip much more worthwhile! the flea market is a must and so is the pueblo cultural center, esp. b/c they give ndn discount! and the casinos are just awesome!

that's good you were able to make much more of your trip...

MIW Should be done and over with on Thursday night!

they should do the whole MIW thing that night of the pageant, the crowning, etc. it takes up too much of the time at the powwow! I'm sure i'm not the only one that feels this way. LOL! And no I don't sit through the entire thing on Saturday night, we wondered in till 2 hours after grand entry when all the contesting started again.

I'm glad we can watch all the videos here at powwows.com. Thanks Paul, and everyone who helped out with filming. But yeah, I was very disappointed to miss all the talent presentations along with almost everything else.

And I missed hearing Fawn Wood jam in person and seeing her public marriage proposal! Missing that one made me cry.

It was surprising to see the MIW contest continuing the next day with the Interviews! At least I got some pics of the contestants. I was wondering how long the crowning would go on Sat - we were long gone to Texas already.

I didn't notice any threads about diabetes amongst native people. I don't know about anyone else, but diabetes is becoming a concern of mine, personally because I have family members with this disease. I would just like to hear what others' comments are about this disease. I had a grandmother that...

I've had this question rolling around in my head for a couple weeks now so bear with me. See, I am at a wall with my family research, wherein it's so long ago that records aren't much help. There are conflicting accounts of one ancestor's heritage (Ojibwe? Menominee? Odawa? All of the above) among her...

Here's a good one. I was going to a pow wow in Hopkinsville, KY with my brother, we loaded ourselves and our stuff into my little Chevy Cavalier and took off. Along the way we passed a place called Big Bone Lick State...

So, I have just moved to Indiana from Texas for college. Unfortunately that means my powwow is back home, and as it happens during the school year, I can’t go. I was hoping someone had recommendations for Powwows near East Indiana that I could go to. Unfortunately I’m apparently the only...
