The 45th Annual Delaware Pow-wow will be May 22, 23 and 24, at the Fred Fall Leaf Memorial Pow-wow Grounds in Copan, Ok. The location is three miles north of Copan and two miles east on County Rd 600.
Head Singer is Vann Big Horse from Pawhuska. Head Man is Dee Ketchum of Bartlesville and Head Lady is Annette Ketchum of Bartlesville. MCs are Tony Arkeketa and Brad Kills Crow, both of Ponca City. The Stomp Dance MC is David Tyner of Dewey. Arena Directors for this event are Neil Lawhead from Kansas City and Dude Blalock of Miami. The Red Land Singers will be the Host Northern Drum. The Host Gourd Groups are the Osage Gourd Clan and the Lenape Gourd Group. The Color Guards are the Lenape Color Guard and the Native American Veterans of Broken Arrow. The 2009 Delaware Pow-wow Princess is Mallori Shawnee from Owasso. The Honoree for this year’s pow-wow is Curt Johnson of Bartlesville.
The dance begins Friday evening, May 22 with gourd dancing from 6 p.m. followed by the grand entry at 8 p.m. Following the grand entry, the 2009 Delaware Pow-wow Princess Malloi Shawnee of Owasso, Ok, will be crowned by last year’s princess, Julia Jones of Bartlesville. The Tiny Tots and Junior Boys and Girls dance competitions will be held on Friday evening also.
Saturday begins with the annual Fry Bread Contest at 10 a.m. at Forrest Yearout’s Camp. At 11 a.m. on Saturday will be the Bet Football Game between the men and women in the area between the Markley Camp and the Fall Leaf home. Gourd dancing will be from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday with a supper break from 5 p.m-6 p.m. Grand Entry will begin at 8 p.m. All women’s contests will be held on Saturday evening as well as an “Old School Oklahoma Style Fancy Dance Contest” for the men (sponsored by “The Dog Pound”) and a “Senior Men’s Straight Dance Contest” sponsored by the Dee Ketchum Family. After the pow-wow a “Women’s Singers 49 Contest” sponsored by “The Dog Pound” will be held. Stomp Dancing will begin after this contest.
The New Hope Indian Methodist Church will host a Sunday morning church service in the arena at 10 a.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Mike Svitak. Everyone is invited to attend. Additionally, on Sunday, a gourd dancing will again be held from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. and also from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the supper break in the middle. At 8 p.m. the final 2009 Grand Entry will begin. The Sunday evening activities will include all of the men’s dance contests as well as “The Paulette TallChief Memorial Cloth Contest” sponsored by Paulette’s family and friends. At the end of the evening on Sunday, dance competition winners will be announced.
