  • IICOT Powwow

How was the new location? KCQuapaw? wazhazhe? osagesooner?

I heard Cherrah did a good job as head woman dancer!

    What drums were there?

    Who won the dance contests?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

It was at a different location this year and I think alot of people were not too happy with the change. They put up two big circus tents and placed air conditioners and huge fans in there to keep it cool. However, it was really crowded in the powwow tent and they end up raising the flaps to allow people to see the event from outside the tent. This also meant that the cool air was gone, except right in front of the fans. The vendor tent was not near as crowded and alot cooler. It was the bigger tent and maybe the powwow should have been inside that one.

I liked the tent during the afternoon session because it was cool inside and the arena was shaded from the hot sun. However, it was not comparable to the expo center. I don't think we should have to pay as much for this event when it was not near as comfortable as an air-conditioned building with indoor plumbing. They should maybe just have it outside instead next year. We are all used to outdoor powwows and maybe the admission rates could be eliminated. That might help bring people out.
We will be known forever by the tracks we leave..Dakota leader.

They would have been better off if they just had one big huge outdoor powwow...with an arena...arbors...benches...

It was chaotic and many spectators were disappointed that they paid 5 dollars and couldn't even get into the dance tent. The Vendor tent was black and red...so many artists/vendors left early saturday because the sunlight shining thru the tent mad everything look orange. and it was unbelievably hot in the Vendor tent. It was like a slow cooker.
Not to mention electrical problems in the food court. and no sno cone stands!

it was hot to dance under the tent also...or so i heard. Not to mention the dancers had to dodge the tent poles that were holding the circus tent up.

and the parking was pitch black at night when we left. Also, there was a one-way, dirt rutted out entrance road to get into the parking lot.

better luck next year iicot. what the heck happened?!?!?!

If it is going to be outside next year...PUT THAT ON THE FLIER!!! PLEASE.

Naw, Okies are used to outdoor powwows. This was a navaho style tent powwow.

you know powwow navajoes... they like to steal other tribes regalia style of dress...

they need to just stick with their own velvet dresses and honey buns that are tied up in yarn.

              YEEEEEE! jokes.

And Mohawk Park was the best!! anyone remember when they had it out at allen ranch in bixby back in 85 or so???

Glad that we didn't go. Sounds like we dodged a bullet. Felt like it was not going to be worth it to go. Having to pay to go to the powwow circus under the tent in the heat, just is not right. Why did they switch the days of some contest? Womans buckskin Sunday night and mens grass dancing with the jrs in the afternoon? I'm lost. Maybe iicot will read these and learn.

OH yeah! Mohawk (tulsa pw) had the best nines! wow. my last memory of the last nine i went to at mohawk was seeing 1000 skins fleeing in their cars from the tulsa police. some one flipped a tulsa police car over and everyone scattered.
They should've left us alone. aye.

then i remember next year going somewhere by lake keystone for a nine.

Still...nothing beats air conditioning and flushy cans!

Hmmm? Sounds like a mixed review of the new location. So from what I am hearing. the tent was not a good idea and perhaps the committee should consider changing either to an outside powwow or inside an air conditioned building?

It was nice to see some new names in the winners circle!

It seems some of you miss the 49's of the olden days back at Mohawk? Well, sad to say, it ain't gonna happen like that again. Well, at least there are some good memories.

I have a funny 49 memory from the Rock House at Mohawk Park... One of the host family's son's was relieving himself from the banks of the river - into the river. One of his crazy friends saw him and ran and pushed him from behind into the river while he was still going! OHH MY GOSH that, was, fuuuuuunny!!!!!!

Dang WhoMe, you could start a new thread with this one and call it memory lane.
All the pow-wows mentioned in this thread brings back memories.
At that Allen Ranch pow-wow Osage's put up a drum group.
And I think we had it wrapped up if they would have had the MA.Z.
It was between us and a fiesty little Northern drum. Shoot we were battling.
People were complaining that we were a traditional drum and shouldn't be
allowed to compete because we had "BIG MO" sitting with us. Oh yeah, at that
Bixby Pow-wow was the one where your boy Jackie caught a ride to the pow-wow
in a taxi and then didn't have the cab-fare. Okay, that's enough memory lanin' for me.

As for me and my little crew we skipped out on IICOT this year. My dancers
went to the little wayne concert with a group of their friends. They've been
making plans for while. The ones that went to the concert are all future
                            dance champions. Maybe next year?

I decided to skip IICOT this year, first time in about 10 years. Sounds like I made a good decision. So what's going on with IICOT and/or the Expo Center?? I'm outta the loop.......

The powwow was last weekend at Indy. I went. I have to admit it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated after being to the other "event" I went to the previous weekend. It was typical for a Indiana powwow.

Some of the same spooky people were at both events but the real difference...

OK so I was at this little gathering here in Florida called Chasco festival. It is mostly a fair, witt midway rides and whatnot, but back in a little corner is where the NDNs would sing and dance, along with a handful of vendors. This gathering was kinda special for me...
