Well...just don't use her as your example of how to dance. I was wondering about her when I saw the picture for the first time (and I'm still wondering).

Ok...that being said you already have a distinct advantage over people like her. You've come to the right place to ask questions, and you have heard from folks who have been dancing probably most, if not all, of their lives.

So...don't let this scare you off. Take the advice of kiyanii mom and check out the Seminole Hard Rock powwow. From posts on the site in the past I think we can safely say that Florida powwows run the spectrum from the very cheesy to the very authentic - Seminole being on the upper end of the spectrum.

I have carefully studied the dance done by that lady, and man, with their hands appearing to beseech the heavens, and can only say it may have been part of their heritage, as shown here: YouTube - Safety Dance- Men Without Hats

Seriously, don't come here and ask for permission or advice. As many folks here have said, just do it. OMG, you act like the world will end if you do it wrong or someone will make fun of you. Well, if you wear that vest you posted in the other forum, I would make fun of you. Just go out in an intertribal and walk around. There, that would be your start. That's what you should do when you are not dressed in a dance outfit (if anyone corrects me and says its called "regalia", they should know that others call it outfits and I'll laugh at them too). Walk around, how bleeping hard can that be. That powwow in the pics, you'll have no problem going out there and dancing when the mc invites people. Suck it up, stop waffling, and stop making such a big deal out of it, its only an intertribal (I know its a big deal to you, but if you want to dance, then dance).

                DITTO!!!

I already have more respect for you because your not wanting to look like a fool. None of us are perfect... I have had my share of boo boos... (which we won't talk about..). But the fact that you are trying not to offend speaks volumes...

Undoubtedly, Chicken (Prairie) Dancing is becoming more popular coast-to-coast.

I have seen Navaho, Comanche and Lumbee chicken dancers.

Anybody wanna' venture out and explain this dance? Perhaps the who (tribe/s), what, where, whys and how?

Gourd Dance is NOT a veteran's dance
                              by WhoMe
Recently at a powwow in Oklahoma City, a well known Kiowa elder told the gourd dancers, "The gourd dance is not a veteran's dance, it is Tiah Piah - an ancient dance of the Kiowa."

During the 2005 National Powwow in Washington DC, the origins of powwow dancing were explained...
