  • Okies. Where you going on the 4th?

There are lots of fireworks going on in Oklahoma on the 4th of July weekend with several native celebrations taking place.

Okies where are you going on 4th of July weekend?

    1. Quapaw Powwow?
    2. Pawnee Homecoming?
    3. Ft. Marion Powwow?
    4. Carnegie Park?
    5. Chieftain Park?
    6. Staying close to home to pop fireworks with the kids.
    7. Nowhere. It's too darn hot outside!

(I heard they cancelled TiahPiah Park, N. of Lawton this year?)
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

I remember a long time ago I started off in Lawton in the afternoon, the Chieftan Park in the evening, then Carnegie 49 at 4 Corners after hours. The next day I went to Tonkawa in the evening (used to be during the 4th weekend), then Pawnee 49 at South Roads after hours. Then the last day I went to Quapaw.

Whew! I just did it to see if I could.

"The things we do when we're young and crazy, ennit?"

I'm new to this part of Oklahoma, been about 2 weeks. Moved here from the east side, around Fort Smith, Arkansas. Up here in the Panhandle, the farthest reaches of the realm, I don't see many options. I may just opt for #7. There's not even a casino within a day's drive. I might get a box of sparklers, and sit on the deck for awhile, maybe have a small bottle of pop.

I am Quapaw bound. My family goes there every year since I can remember. My grandpa loved to camp up there and I am trying to keep his tradition going strong. I'm not the best camper but I've vowed to set up a tent and camp on Friday night every year. I usually wimp out and get a hotel room for Saturday, lol...

One year, during Labor Day weekend, my friends and I took a road trip and hit up 2 powwows. On Friday night we went to Tahlequah for Cherokee Holiday powwow. Then on Saturday we drove to Eufala for that powwow and end up staying all night for the 49. My friend had an older large car with a hood big enough to stretch out on, so that's where we slept. In the morning we woke up (all rugged) and looked around to see campers fixing breakfast and drinking coffee... We climbed back into the hoop-tee and drove on.... Good times!

                      shinob,

Tell your dad I said hello. We used to stay with him and your mom in SLC when you were little. My family and I always appreciated his generosity.

Hope you catch some big musky and walleye!
