  • stereotypical overkills

For many years I have noticed certain designs, actions and what nots, that appear in the powwow world...they become a fashion, then almost craze status and routine for a while and then finally cliche'.
for example...in the powwow arena....dropping money in front of you favorite dancer. (it was good until it became a way to influence the judges).
Traditional dancers whistling up drums immediately after thier contest and acting as if they are on some unkown holy mission to bless every one and everything...(when only moments before, they were in heated competition against some of thier worst "powwow enemies")
That "end of the trail" design.....{hungover person on a lazy horse}...yeah at first it may have been kinda cool...But!
Just ranting! any more stereotypes that fit the mold?

Oh yeah....every one and thier mom-in-law running water out to a dancer....what happened to stamina?

Yep, seen that money dropping. They might as well whip out their pompoms, and miniskirt, and say a few cheers. Wouldn't it be better to honor the person with a giveaway, or a special, or even a gift in front of a few friends. And yes, some of the whistle blowers, I have seen that as well. I use to watch them planning who was going to do what, and wondered, is this coming from the heart, or is it a big production. No disrespect to those who carry, but there alot of those who should not be carrying those whistles who use it as to set themselves on high above the powwow goers. I think sometimes we should step back and look at how it may look to the community, and is it right.

Yeah, I saw this mountain man, quiet respectful, mostly shopping the vendors, but he had on a green beret! Wow, so I passed my camera to my Native friend so I can ask to get a picture with him...and poof! he was gone, shapeshifted or something? Musta been the beret, he saw I wanted that knowledge....my bad....

yes, what happened to stamina? I could understand if a dancer needed water while they were dancing in an "Ironman/Ironwoman" contest.
It's as if the parents or personal trainers need the audience to know that's their relative dancing so they "rush" out and offer water. Come on, it's not a triathalon.
Another overkill, is the people with video cameras. Do dancers really need to watch themselves that much? I see people recording their family members every weekend. I understand if its someones first time dancing. It's also very inconsiderate of the people sitting behind them.
And last but not least: the dance coaches sitting on the side while their kid is dancing. We try out our new moves at home; practice, practice is what we do while jamming to our favorite drummers at home!! we give our kids the freedom to have their own dance style, we don't promote watching powwow videos to learn how to dance.

                              well said big river!
that is what it sometimes seems as though when some people run out with water they seem to be making it known to the judges "this is my homie" it may not be that way always but at times it sure looks that way.

I am interested how you all felt about the gun control debate that has ensued after the Sandy Hook massacre. It seems to be getting more and more heated every day with the nation equally divided between gun owners who are vehemently opposed to any sort of regulation and those who are calling for new...

Recently, my family and I attended a powwow here in Rapid City, and just about went BROKE! Even the admission alone put us back over $100.00 for the weekend. Even my four year old, who slept most of the evening sessions, had to pay $9.75 for the weekend.

                                The concession stand in the...

A LOT of people record audio and/or video at powwows; perhaps mostly for personal use, but we really don't know in all cases where each video is going or if it may appear for sale somewhere. There are some recorders are very obviously commercial; they bought huge $2500 high resolution video cameras...
