I'm going again, I always stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino(Isleta) and I have reservations already. The only part I hate is that you have to use your room key in the elevators for it to take you your floor rrrghh!!!! But I am usually lucky in the casino Can't wait!!!

I don't want to sound like I am defending Derrick BUT he doe have other business ventures outside of the powwow to earn money. Also non-profit employees ARE allowed to take a stipend for their work, which has to be approved by the board, so yeah he probably does make something off of it.

I'm sure they do make a pretty penny off of the powwow but think about how much it costs to put on. The venues, the facilities employees, electricians, audio and video crew, head staff, host drum, the AD, Emcees, equipment rentals, security staff, venue support personnel, event insurance, unions(maybe) and utility bills (have any idea how much energy all of those HID lights cost to run).

Personally I think any donation to a scholarship is awesome and even if it's a few hundred dollars its enough to buy some textbooks or cover some lab fees. Could he donate more into it, yeah, but people shouldn't complain about the amount of a scholarship.

Protesting this powwow wouldn't do anything to affect a change until you get all the big name powwow people to join the ranks but I'm guessing they won't because they make too much money off of it. Also UNM and the city would back Derrick and the committee up simply because the event brings in millions to the local economy which is something small cities will fight for.

An e-mail goes around just about every year, usually titled something along the lines of "Gathering Of Matthews Dollars", which calls for a protesting the powwow and calls out Derrick for being a fraud and for doing shady underhanded things. It never goes anywhere beyond e-mails. Why? Because the big named people and powwow families will go to it because it is one of the largest powwows and they get treated like royalty. Can you blame them for taking the money, fame, and the luxury?

Again I'm not defending him or the committee as I'm sure they involve themselves in a few shady things.

The City of Albuquerque, and the UNM also benefit from GON, as well as music industry and clothing companies.

To attack just one man because he is so visible makes no sense when so many people are involved.

The best way to protest GON is to start another Mega-Powwow at the same time in fair competition. Go for it!
