2013 Powwow Trail - California

Here is my rundown from my sources:

The attendance was light for 2013 Tha Pow Wow (held during Cinco De Mayo weekend).

The San Manuel Ballpark food concession was open for the powwow, and it was a bit expensive.

The security was just like a ballgame, all bags and coolers were opened and inspected.

Only TWO Native food booths were set up inside the ballpark.


The dance arena was set up on the infield. The pitching mound was removed for the powwow, just flat dirt remained.

Dancers commented that the grass infield was too soft and mushy.

From what I heard, THA POW WOW may move for next year, to a new location.

UCSD La Jolla, Calif Powwow

University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus at La Jolla, Calif.

This was the 3rd Annual UCSD Native American Student Alliance (NASA) Powwow. These college kids can figger out the circumference of the Moon. They are getting better each year with their new college powwow.

This year, rain clouds hung along the California coast and probably kept people away from the powwow. It was also Cinco De Mayo weekend, with many events all over.

I was with my grandkids, but we stopped by Funky Downtown La Jolla (quoting B.B. King) LOL and I managed to get a video:

My friends at UC Riverside said it was packed with dancers! Dang, I should of stopped by.




Standing Bear in Bakersfield is a nice little social powwow. The dance arena is natural grass in great condition, with plenty of parking for dancers & families close by. Spectators have a separate parking area, not very far away also.

Standing Bear used to be held at the local college, but a few years ago they had to move, and chose the Kern County Fairgrounds. This little pow wow runs on all volunteers, and vendor support.
