  • Backup singers.

I was listening to the powwow radio via the internet and a song came on that I liked. So I turn it up and there a woman singing "backup" and it sounded AWFUL. So I was watching the videos and there was footage from a handdrum contest from GON and again....I thought the backup singing didn't sound good at all. To give it one more shot, I'm listening to the powwow radio and some of them sounded okay if they didn't what seemed to take over or be too loud...but again, some to me, made me not wanna listen to the song anymore.

I'm not hatin' but I don't ever remember backupsingers being so popular. To each her own I guess,
    Rachel

Sorry to have to disagree with you rachel.

We participated in that handdrum singing contest sponsored by Delia. So, of course we listened to all the other competing groups.

What you may not know is that when you are up there in front of 30,000 people, you cannot do a sound check on your microphones. We were "live" as soon as they "gave us the high sign!" So we couldn't tell if our distance away from the microphone were equally matching or complimenting one another (two males, one female), or if the drums were too loud or not loud enough.

From what we heard of the other groups, the sound levels were adjusted after the competitors began their song. The sound recorded for radio may not be "true to life" either.

From what I remember, each of the women backup singers were extremely talented and complimented the two male singers.

I applaude Delia for sponsoring a very unique singing contest that highlighed women back up singers during North America's Largest Powwow.

Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

That was a good one, although there was one crew that sounded purty rough....The guys forgot the tune and the woman was left all on her own to sing. They took it up real high too....It was one for the books....Who Me you and your pop sounded good....Can't remember what woman jammed with you? Delia Brian and Irvin sounded good and the special was cool...

I guess it takes a real singer to recognize quality singing.
Since your point is about back-up singers being (popular?) It doens't matter if they ever were or weren't popular, at least they are out there *trying* and honoring the drum.
Each drum/ individual/ song is uniquely different in their own way...

'WhoMe' is right: GON is one of the premier powwows to broadcast such good singing..by both male and female singers.

          Singing Criteria
          by WhoMe
I need some advice in setting up 5 criteria to judge singers/drum groups on.

I will be using this in a real tabulation form.

Two criteria that I would like to consider are:

          1. Quality of the Lead
          2. Quality and Precision of the Second
