  • Dance Contest Numbers - Where to put them?

    Just curious...

Where is the best place to put your dance contest number on your dance clothes?

"Be good, be kind, help each other."
"Respect the ground, respect the drum, respect each other."

My sister and nieces dance fancy shawl and jingle. For fancy shawl they'll place the number in the left side of the shawl. For jingle they'll place the number on their purse.

I did notice that Gracie Her Many Horses Meeks is the only dancer who puts her number on the back of her shawl.

My daughter dances jingle and he always asks me to put her number on the left shoulder, and my son dances grass and he puts his on his right cuff.

              Historian,

On the left side for sure. Most grand entries come into the arena and turn left. The number takers are all situated around the outskirts of the arena.

For men, the left: Shirt shoulder, breech cloth, cuff, side drop, shield or wheel.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Depends on your dance style- Jingle usually on your left shoulder

But I have seen it on the left arm, a purse and below the belt.

Rule of thumb: If you notice the experienced dancers find creative ways to put their numbers on, but it is always on the left side for the simple fact of grand entry to make sure you get points. If they don't take points at grand entry it doesn't matter, as long as its visible. I usually put my number on the left side of my shawl when I danced. (oh, how I miss them dayz)

Next powwow I'll miss grand entry because i'll be stessing out where to put my number so it can be seen. yet I don't want it to look tooooo obvious that i want my number to be seen ya know? i gotta be cool about it.
I was just thinking maybe neon lights or something but that would be too expensive!

You only do that if your number is 666.

I always like to put it at the bottom of my apron. Than way when it's time to line up after a contest, I lift up my front apron to make sure all the judges see it AND so everyone gets the free show, if ya know what i mean ;) haha You can earn some extra, last minute points that way!!
