    French Girl,
Yes it can be done but you would need to attend many powwows. Of course you can stay in a regional area but you'd need to go a powwow almost every weekend during powwow season. You'd have to make friends and smile constantly. You would need a powwow family to befriend and like you, they would have to choose you for you wouldn't be able to ask or demand. You couldn't just say, "hey, I want to dance and contest!" Keep it a secret and let them teach you, pretend you don't know how to dance and you'll see how eager they are to teach you. This would have to be repeated for a number of years and even then you wouldn't be able to contest but I bet if you hung around until you were 50 years old, then and only then, you would be able to participate in women's golden age. Do you have enough money and time to do this? Oh, look for a family with many sons for they are always eager to have a pretty girl around.

Some powwows do card people for ndn status, so I guess if you dont have it, then you cant. I doubt this would go over well, like you are trying to be something you cant

Very well madame. Now have you decided what you are going to do about coming down to the northern or southern plains to start your life of powwows? Do you know how to make frybread, dried turnip and dried corn soup, wojapi or what about choh-king bread?

We would like to live in Canada but it's difficult: We must leave all our family...
Whe would like to do on time the powwow trail but we need enough money to do it.
I know to make frybread yes but not the others things: It's my husband who cook at home: It's his job !
Happy from my answer monsieur ?

I have a question kind of related to this. Ive seen some people dance during competition but they werent wearing a number. Like this past weekend a Mohawk boys was dancing during the Smoke dance competition but he wasnt wearing a number and Im pretty sure he wasnt competing cause he didnt stay for the last day when they announced the places. I just wanted to know if anyone could explain it to me.... since Im totally not a dancer due to me being scottish highland dancer and doing both would cost a lot of money time and traveling I already travel all over the country to highland games I couldnt imagine trying to make it to multiple powwows too .... So I scottish highland dance to make my dad happy since I totally failed at the bag pipes and I do bead work and hand weave with my mom best of both worlds. lol

It depends on the powwow but I have seen dancers that are not contesting, dance during a contest...
Mainly because the best songs are used during contesting
Some only want to dance but not Compete

It is up to the Powwow Commitee/Headstaff however and always ask before you just jump out there.

                                Boozhoo,
I have attended plenty of powwows in my day, but never had any insight into the inner workings. As my university has finally settled its racist mascot situation, I want to organize a giant powwow in the fall to kick a brand new start. I plan on contacting the American Indian Center...

If you were going to get married at a pow-wow, what would you do? have it in the arena? Would you have it at the camp?

Would you have a song or have bridesmaids and groom dance around the arena?

Would you have everyone dress in their regalia or for the guys would you wear...

I was wondering if there is a group of folks or someone who would be willing to teach me to dance Straight. I'm from Wisconsin and we don't really have that way up here.

I'm more than likely going to school in either Oklahoma, Arizona or New Mexico. It is my hope to find some people who...

                                Hi,

I've attended Pow-wows since 1991 and I've never danced. Although my heritage and ethnic origin is North American Indian. I've never learned the dances. Will you teach me. I live in Eastern, North Carolina. I love Pow-wows and the drum and the people.

So I finally convinced my mom to let me learn the culture. She is even going to take some regalia-making classes with me too but I'm going into pow wow dancing classes alone.

My question here... how do I calm my nerves and what should I expect? I do struggle with identity issues as I'm...
