  • Elder's Only -- Seating

DOYOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE A SECTION OF THE ARENA BLOCKED OFF AND MARKED "ELDER'S ONLY" THAT IT SHOULD BE FOR NATIVE ELDER'S ONLY?

I WAS OUT A POW WOW AND THIS CROW WOMAN I WOULD SAY SHE WAS ABOUT MID 40'S REALLY PUT UP A LOUD STINK BECAUSE THIS WHITE ELDER COUPLE HAD SAT DOWN IN THAT SECTION.

THERE WERE MORE THAN PLENTY OF SEATS FOR OTHER'S AND THIS WHITE COUPLE WAS I WOULD SAY AT LEAST IN THEIR 70'S.

DO YOU CARE WHO SIT'S IN ELDER ONLY SEATING? I SAY AN ELDER IS AN ELDER AND THEY ALL SHOULD BE GIVEN THE SAME RESPECT NO MATTER WHAT RACE.

YES MEN NIE TURTLES THEY WERE VERY RESPECTFUL. I WATCHED THEM ONLY BECAUSE THE NATIVE WOMAN REALLY MADE ME THINK "NOT ALL US NDN'S THINK LIKE HER" WHAT A WHINEY SELFISH LADY SHE WAS.

THE WHITE ELDER COUPLE SAT THERE FOR ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR EATING FRY BREAD AND THEY WERE REALLY ENJOYING IT AS I SAW THE HUSBAND KEEP TEARING PIECES OFF FOR HIS WIFE AND SAYING "THIS IS VERY GOOD ISN'T IT HONEY?"

IT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE THEM ENJOYING THE POW WOW.

ANYWAY THANK YOU GUYS FOR REPLYING.

Well thats good . If we do not show respect to the elders of all walks how can we teach our children an grand children to honor them no matter what walk they come from.

I was at the Paris Landing TN Pow Wow and there was an Elders Only section there up under a tree with plenty of shade and good view of the circle. I thought it was very nice. There were a couple of white Elders sitting in there along with some of the Native Elders they wer chatting and having a good time, there was more than enough seating yet only a few there. I heard no one complain and thought it was just the thing! It was close to the bathrooms and free water and not that far from the food boothes either!

A couple of different people asked me about it, but I couldnt answer their questions I had never seen one before. But as I said it is a nice idea, especially with so many visitors that come and don't have their own chairs or shade(like awnings I've seen).

I think if I had heard this lady whining about it I would have tried to take her off to the side to give her a quick lesson in what respect really means. There are Elders regardless who and what color they are, then there are people who are simply older certainly not wiser.
I live in Tennessee, that does not make me a wannabe, hick or hillbilly. If you think it does, then what does it say about you?

I agree no difference especially if it is an inter tribal powwow.

An elder is an elder, regardless of their race or color. I cannot teach my children tolerance if I do not have it myself.

Well personally being in a wheelchair and being a bit on the elderly side (be nice now) I like the idea of an elders only area! I like that very much! I'm tired of going to Pow Wows and having no where to sit (shhh never mind I take my seat with me) I can't get close enough to see what is going on due to so many young people standing around blocking the view! Or when there are stadiums such at the Trail of Tears Pow Wow in Hopkinsville KY they will block the entrance not even the Dancers can get in, let alone the Elders or anyone else, and heaven forbid you to be in a wheelchair, it's like you don't exist! Or you have to sit right there and some young bit who has no training or teaching is letting their children scream for the sake of screaming!

Please let the Sr's Elders elderly handicapped whatever you want to call us have our own space! That would be sooo nice!

Tsiniti thank you for telling me about Paris Landing! I'm not very portable but the more local Pow Wows there are then the happier I am! I'm sorry but this years TOT's stunk! The Dancers were great, but what in the world happened to the Vendors?
I am who I have always been. If you don't like that then you have my permission to leave.
Yes I am enrolled, and your point is?

I hear you loud and clear !!!
It is truly apitty that every powwow I see the same treatment, you are amazing and should be proud, it is people like you that keep going to powwows that make it all worthwhile to a vendor like me. I make room so that wheelchair drivers have more room to manuver at my stand. And yes I agree that no matter what race or color seniors should be able to sit together, they do have a common bond afterall, you have seen more than we have and lived your life to have earned a spot of respect.
