  • Hawaii Pow Wow

I just attended two Pow Wow in Hawaii. One in Waimea (Big Island) and One in Ohau. This past weekend the PowWow in near Waikiki was great and we were treated to a performance by Joy Harjo. If you dont know who she is you need to find out. I have loved her work for years and I got a CD autographed by her. Beautiful dancing and singing. Only 3 drums, but it was great,
    Aloha,

Hey I was in Waimea too! It was a small pow wow, but I had a great time. The coolest part was that a lot of Native Hawaiians came out; the people out there are sooooo nice! They did a presentation during dinner break...man, listening to those women sing was AMAZING--they gave me goosebumps!

It was kinda funny though, once we got to the airport at the big island people would stop us to ask if the we were there for a pow wow...I guess they know there's a pow wow once they see ndns in town!
How ya gonna have high expectations but got no patience?!?

I was just out there. 4 days on Oahu and a week on Maui. A freind of mine is a hawaiin entertainer. We went to a golf course outside of Honolulu and listened to a buncjh of local entertainers. Then I sang them some songs from up here in Indn country. Theyu really enjoyed it. Hawaains and Indin's have lots in common.

                    aloha,

Who were the 3 drums that showed up? Who was the head staff?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

The three drum groups are Red thunder, Red Montain, and Blacke Sands. There are all form from the military members that are station in Hawaii. They are Intribal drums. They have a great community out there that puts on these Pow wows. They are not that big but very enjoyable. I live there for about 5 Years in Pearl Harbor and got married to my chick out there. I was in the Marine corp. I also sang with my drum group Young Elk out there. We sang mostly Original Style Northeren. I am San Carlos Apache and Santee Sioux, my wife is White Mountain Apache. The Pow wows in Hawaii are a great time. The People out there are very nice. Try it out sometime.
