  • Otoe-Missouri Encampment 2009

Its been a couple of years since we have been to this dance but this year everything came together that we were able to not only make it but to camp out with lots of good friends and new friends also!
The weather was just right low 90's and down into the mid 60's for this time of year in OK its a miracle!!!

Good singing all weekend and the dancing was superb although I dont have the winner's list all were champions in my book

The old school fancy dance contest on Saturday was a sight to behold to watch and to hear them bells right in beat with the drum
    Wheecha!

We smelled cook fires all over the place all weekend and of course the smell of roasting kidneys premeated the air! lol

All in all a great feeling for a dance and look forward to next year of course it will be it normally hotttt and sticky but hey its Oklahoma in July what do you spect!!!

    Good Times Otoe 09!!

I've been going to Otoe for many years and this has to be one of the best I can remember!!

Weather was GREAT, drumming/singing was AWESOME, lots of friends and relatives, the smell of campfires and food in the air and NUTHIN like dancing under the stars in the cool night air!!
Traditions.....keep them and keep them sacred!

I am NOT Indian. I have never been to India, nor has any of my family before me! I have met these people from India, of whom you speak, and I am nothing like them. Why do you call me an Indian?

      Gourd Dance,

To the Otoe people it is something that taken very seriously which was
evident after a weekend spent Gourd Dancing with them during their
      annual dance.

The singing was top notch with three Cozad brothers sitting at the drum

      2004 Thanksgiving
      by Tom Iron Eagle
As we all know we will have to "endure" the stangeness of how people want to remember Thanksgiving yet again upon our hearts and minds.

But here is a good way to think of it and tell others:

Remember that the Thanksgiving we celebrate has nothing to do with Puritan...

      Memories
      by native_flutterby
so i've noticed here on this good ol web site that most if not all the threads pertaining to this style of dancing is very serious, i know that its due to the respect that we have for it, however life isnt always serious. When i think of my role models (the mindy moog) and how they conducted themselves...

      Huntin' anyone?
      by tsuj510
Just wondered if you guys hunted and if so, what you like to go for.

I'm in N. California, but we have a ton of game up here. I'm saving up for a Winchester 30.06 and a compound bow-can't wait to use 'em!
