not exactly sure. smoke dance doesn't have specific regalia like jingle dress, men's tradish, southern straight....it's just tradish iroquois style regalia. smoke dance is just a style of social dance.

Ok thanks for explaining that...but I'm still confused. Are Haliwa-Saponis Iroquois? Is this the style of regalia that Haliwa-Saponis wear?

              Mr/Mrs/Ms pandabear...

I've included the link to the Haliwa Saponi tribe. You'll probably get a more direct or precise answer straight from the tribe.

I like those people out there. Archie had been involved in powwows since the days of Frontier Fort in Wilmington. Most of the young men on the Stoney Creek drum are from there.

I'm sure they will be more than happy to answer your question instead of having to search the internet for an answer.

I posted this here because I'm interested in what posters here think, not the tribe. No one else (that I have ever seen) who is Haliwa-Saponi wears this dress. It is not the dress the girls wear at their tribal powwow. It looks like an Iroquois dress to me.

                  You are kidding me right?????
                  Okay, I get it !
Your right... everyone in Powwow Country only dresses in their own Tribal Gear.
With all the Jingle dresses out there, Somebody's Enrollment totals are way off.

I think what blacktail was saying is Iroquois dress is not like jingle dress. It hasn't become an intertribal style and Iroquois people still are the ones wearing it. Did I miss something?

I hear you, all true. My point is that....
Folks from NY went down to NC MANY years ago and shared this dance. Im not sure exactly who brought it to Whom. But there have been dances in Carolina before.
There is also a very heated topic tied to this discussion.
Some Native Folks in Carolina link heritage back to the Tuscarora people that stayed behind, before they migrated up to their current homeland in NY. The Tusc. eventually joined the 6 Nations.
Some folks may feel it is a natural dress for them to wear.
Not to get into the many facets of that debate.

                      I ask this ...
If a Nakota man wanted to Smoke dance, would he be wrong to do so????
another question for you if so....
Who/what tribe owns the Fancy Dance?

Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

ok i see where the original question comes from. shouldn't someone who is representing their tribe as royalty be dressed in their own style of traditional clothing.

& anyone can dance smoke since it is a CONTEST dance. not SOCIAL or traditional dance. & if someone is goin to dance smoke yes they should wear HAUDENOSAUNEE style clothing.

                            Exactly!

What I was getting at is that what the people of the World Wide Web think isn't important. If you are going to ask a generalized question, then just create a poll. Look at the replies. How many gave a specific yes or no answer?

If there is a concern then go the the person, or tribe of the person, which you feel is doing wrong. Don't put it on the web.

Why must I feel like that..why must I chase the cat?

Please, can you help me, again.

I have only been dancing about two years. When I first begin
I was told, your steps are first the ball of your foot, then
                                the heel.
I thought, I had gotten this down, pretty good.
I loved the few grand entries,...
