  • Crow Hop song for N. Traditional contest

I first saw it at Julyamsh...they gave a crow hop to womens northern traditional category (because there were crow women dancers out there).

It's becoming more common. Where have you seen womens tradish get a crow hop for their contest?

on a side note: my older cousin gave me a half-hour lecture about how I'm not supposed to dance crow hop. that it's not our way. I would be disrespecting my dress to dance "like that."...I haven't got it for a contest song yet....but I'm torn...trying to decide whether I should stick to what our family thinks and not dance *crow style* or if I should conform.

Women dancing the Crow hop and in our area, is not a new thing. Don't let your cousins lecture get you down cuz our category, Women's traditional, does have it's own style of dancing the Crow hop and it's not only a Man's dance.

I've noticed that too!! I enjoy dancing to the double beat songs. We never use to get them very often but now it is more common for the double beat songs to be part of competition.

        crow hop

the double beat crow hop is gaining in popularity. The ladies traditional danced it at Toronto Skydome pow wow.

Personally, I think it's nice to have the option to change up the styles.

The ladies that can dance this style definitely have an edge.

However, if one feels that this would not be good for them to dance this style, due to tribal differences, that's their perogative. I just think that since pow wows are always evolving, and we all tend to adopt styles, etc., from other tribes, it's all good.

I've only seen one yakama family give a crow hop during their special (once at the CDA winter powwow and once at the Olympia powwow). They gave four songs...a straight, a roundance, a crow hop, and a high step. I figured they were pushing the envelope for what is acceptable. My same cuz that gave me the lecture ended up winning that special at olympia. She didn't crow hop during the crow hop song tho....she just stepped...i asked her about it after the special and that's the first time she talked about the contradiction of having a crow hop during a womens short fringe special...especially where a lot of those dresses on the floor were old

The powwow I was at was the Trump 29 powwow at Indio in 2002, and the crow hop was the only song they gave.
My elders dance the Crow hop, they'll get the Whipman after you if you're not out there dancing, so our people have been doing it for a long time.
Once at Pi Ume Sha, the Crow Hop was given to our Golden Age women for their exhibition song. They danced their lil hearts out and had fun, but honestly, I don't think they should have been given a Crow hop during the heat of the day, especially at Warm Springs cuz it's so hot. But they all came back smiling and didn't seem to mind.

it's pretty awesome to see the long ol' fringe of womens buckskin dancers...swaying to the beat of a crow hop....and if powwows are about having fun....then the crow hop is a welcome addition.

I like to dance during a crow hop, especially when a lot of the older women decide to follow each other around.
I just wanted to mention that the Crow Hop and the Double Beat songs are not the same. They sound similar, but they are not the same.

Double Beat Contest for Women's Tradish

My family and I attended a pow wow over the week-end and they had the double beat as part of the contest for women's traditional. We've been away from the circut for a number of years due to weddings, birth of babies and other family obligations, so this was new to both me and my daughter, and while she was was able to do a passable version, I was at a complete loss. So now were trying to find songs to practice this dance to. Any suggestions?

sounds like you'll have to go shopping for some cd's! once you got a few good songs, start practicing at home. I'm still in the practice stage myself!

i also know that a lotta ladies were upset cause they hadn't recieved a double beat before... but to be fair in competition, they provided a double beat for us crow gals...
traditionally, us crow gals don't really recieve a rounddance during our competitions... it's normally a straight song & a double beat... but at other powwows, to be accomidatig to everyone and n. tradish style we always get a straigh & a rounddance... we still get out there and jamm too! personally it doesn't bother me... i'm actually happy to be double beatin' out there more now! :)

a great double beat cd to check out is the one the maddog singers put out... #4 especially jams! i believe they're on "indian house" records... might wanna do a search

and if ya'll wanna good lesson... come to crow fair! ;)

                          BB,

You bring out some good points. Many Crow women dance in buckskins to a double beat as their/your traditional song of choice.

I wonder if since some eastern women do their blanket dance in buckskin, if there will ever be an "eastern blanket style" put in the women's traditional dance competition at a future dance - back east?

                          Is this possible?

Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

I work in the book and music store at Prairie Edge in Rapid City, SD. We carry two Maddog Double Beat CD's that are just outrageous! I play them all the time, and I get in some good practice. We also have "Worlds Best Crow Hop Songs" which is a compilation CD, as well as other compilations that have excellent crow hop songs or double beats.

I say to the women who were upset........TOUGH! Deal with it! If you want to compete then you should learn all the possible songs that may come your way. I guess it separates the girls from the women.

Ok, just wondering, what is if any are the differences between the "regular" fancy shawl dance, and the crow hop? :p

Well from my perspective, the crow hop to me, means you imitate the way a crow moves.. aiyee, am I just getting my foot stuck in my mouth?

This is something that I have been questioning for at least 5 years now, cause as of maybe 6-7 years ago, the only place you would see the crow style songs was in crow country or specials made for crow style dancers (women and men). Now being from canada, the last say, 4 years I started to see that...

I think it should be left to the fancy shawl dancers.
