  • Buckskin dressmakers

Do any of you know of a reputable skin dressmaker? I sew So. cloth, but want to give my daughter a skin dress for her birthday next year.
She'd like a Trad. So. buckskin that will be classy and timeless.
I live in Burque so it would be nice if they weren't too far away or have something in the Gallery so I could see their work. If so, please PM me. I don't mine paying good money for GOOD work

Im not familiar with a "skin dress" but I do know they wear a cloth dress that looks for the lack of better words laura ingals that name was only used cause lack of better words and a quick image instead of me typing a mile. They are very pretty and have beaded necklaces, and beaded colers ,long white aprons a nd a bit of frill. My gramma is Choctaw but I dont have a dress like that yet.

            Chahta dress

My family was given permission by a reputable Kiowa family to dance Southern Cloth/skin.

However, the trad. Chahta dress is cloth with ruffles 2 or 3 depending on whether you Miss. or Ok. We usually don't compete in them but save them for tribal sponsored events. Occassionally we wear them to PW just to 'represent'.

Our 'skins' historically was from the waist down only, as we went topless, remember we were in the Delta/Miss. Alabama area! We wore 'jackets' made of Turkey feathers. I don't think that would go over to well at a PW. (lol)

Look for Donna Sockey Pitts website, she makes tradish Chahta dresses. Just google her name, as I don't remember her website address.

Thanks Eagle Plumes. And you're right...they do look like 'little house on the prairie' and boy are they hot! The opening was in back for single women and in front for married women (to nurse).

Let's just say the whites covered us up real quick when they saw the women running around just like our men, bare chested! So we assimilated with those dresses the white women made for us, covering up everything.

                    Fancy Dancer.....

OMG is her stuff goregous or what!!
The price is about what I'd expect to pay for good work and the dancers she's made regalia for wow!

After 10 years in So.Cloth I think it's time to step my daughter up to buckskin. She's wanted to for a long time but with 3 kids, she just didn't want to spend that kind of money on herself. She so puts everyone before herself.

So let me pick up some extra hours and get this show on the road.

Thanks again, if you know of anyone else (just in case they're backed up) please let me know.

How do you store your buckskin dress? I've heard some people wrap them in sheets and fold them, and others hang them up. I just had one made for my daughter and need some advice before I do something I may regret.

I have a couple of cloth dresses and have finally decided to put the time, effort and money into my first buckskin dress. I tried to buy one (don't yell at me, I have two small kids and finding time to cut all that fringe was a bit daunting! ) but everytime I almost made a deal with someone,...

Hi. I am hoping someone out there can help me. I am looking for a pattern for an apache buckskin dress or someone who knows how to make one. I think I could make one if I had the right instructions but if the price was right, I wouldn't mind buying one already made. I would do all the beadwork....

Has anyone seen a traditional two deerskin strap dress worn at any pow wows? This style of dress was common among the Cree, Ojibwe and Metis people of the Great Lakes in the past but sadly, I have never seen a contemporary version of one worn in the circle. I have heard of people wearing a cloth strap...
