I personally wear cotton excersise shorts underneath my dress. I am not a skinny minnie and I hate it when sweat runs down my legs or when I get heat rash between my legs from the sweat. The shorts prevent that and they don't ride either and are thin enough that you can not tell I have them on underneath.

Bike tops (racer back) and shorts work great for under regalia.

I try and stay in the shade as much as possible and sit still. I remember at Squilax powwow when I had my give away, there was a fancy shawl dancer that passed out from the heat. Poor girl. Even wearing a cloth top buckskin it was brutal.


Nothing beats ice cold water, and a nice ndn man to walk around with, fanning you all the while

I'm not skinny either, and here's a tip I read in a magazine to prevent heat rash between your legs. If you apply some antiperspirant, it will stop you from sweating and you won't get a rash. Yes its kind of bizarre, and my family makes fun of me for doing this, but I never get heat rash anymore.

This may sound kind of funny, but actually, if you wear an underdress, it keeps you much cooler...because your dress doesn't get all sticky from your sweat, and it doesn't get stinky! Just a thought...

I drink as much water as I can. I know I'm sweating goot, because I rarely need to use the bathroom during a session(4-6 hours). This last powwow, I really didn't need to eat much, it was all about drinking plenty of water. If its too hot, I just change into and wear one of my cloth dresses, that's all.

I know I asked this question last year, but I wanted to ask the buckskin dancers specifically. What do yall do to keep cool in the summer when wearing a hide dress?

Dont ask me why or how I figured this out, but I SWEAR by this: When I'm putting on my buckskin skirt, I make sure I am in an air conditioned place..even in my van, and it seems to trap the cool air under neath. and when I dance, it doesn't all go away, and so I sit still to keep it there as much as possible (something about this explaination sounds not right, huh?). I think the skins are good for trapping the cool air in. And during breaks, if I can, I go sit, no kidding, with my legs up on the dash of the van, adding more air from the vents under my skirt. A couple of times, when I didn't have my own AC, I asked a friend to let me use their cars ac to shoot some more air up my skirt....lmao...you gotta have some goood friends to go to them with this request. Or word it better than me!!

And of course, I drink lots and lots of water, and use aloe gel on my neck and face to keep feeling cool. And I'm not ashamed to carry an umbrella out with me, using an elderly dancer as an excuse, to shade them, while shading myself. I'm shameless!!! Oh, and those neck thingies, that you soak in water and tie around your neck...those work sooo goood, and you can wrap them in your own scarfs if you dont wanna look to hillbilly!! Walmart!! Only 4 bucks!!!

I don't know, I sit under an awning for shade when it's not my turn to dance, drink lots of juice & water, got my fan, which helps a bit, relish every moment of breeze & just try not to think about it, but to tell you the truth I think I felt the heat more when I was fancy shawl, probably because I was dancing so much faster and all. But nothing feels better then a nice icy glass of strawberry juice. Oh & at another powwow recently my friend brought a veggie tray & dip, I felt way cooler eating that then a steaming hot NDN taco. Think I'm bringing that next time cause I was wishing for it this weekend.
