  • Old Style Fancy

hey everyone, i was just wondering if anyone knew how and what the regalias looked like for old style womens fancy. i remember when the women danced the fast trick songs like the men, and the sneak up songs also. it's just been along time since i seen this done. i remember when i was a girl i used to record trick songs to memorize them and also the fast songs. i just don't see the women doing it anymore. i'd love to dance the fast songs again in competition along with the tricks. so fun, sighs. anyway if anyone has there stories to tell tell them for me and others. i thank you.;)
Grant me the senility to forget the people i never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones i do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

      Hi Dawning!
Are you talking about women War Dancing (now called Men's Fancy) or do you mean Fancy Shawl?
If you mean War Dancing, they wore the same regalia as men for the most part. All the women in my husband's family War Danced when they were young and the only difference I saw was that they wore headbands instead of roaches.
I'm not sure if they wore harnesses too. When they were little girls, they didn't wear shirts, like the men used to, but they wore short breastplates. Of course they wore shirts when they started getting older.
That's all I know. I don't see any women dance that way anymore except in a switch contest. Sometimes my Mother-in-law and her sisters will war dance in place with shawls and just do the footwork and it's a lot of fun on the fast dances..but that is only at family gatherings...not at public Pow-Wows. They would probably get too much flack from people.
Sometimes you just gotta do the dances you love in your own living room...like I try to Jingle Dance at home and yes, sometimes Grass Dance!!!Aaaayyy!

Come on now, if you want to get out there and dance do it! It may not be during a competition, but when all the fancy dancers are requested in the area go out there and show them how its done:) After a few powwows when people are over the shock that women can fancy footwork as good or better than men they may be forced to even let you compete againist the men. Go for it I'm with you.!

If only I was a few pounds lighter and a little more agile! I'm with you Buckskin Lady, tried a little Fancy shawl in my living room. And that's where it stays! Smoke dancing is my favorite. Women always outdo the men I think.

            by tallinjun
Now I know a lot of us have seen it and I was just wondering if anything has ever been said.
I know you see a lot of teenagers hanging onto the teen category til the last drop, but you see sometimes when the older categories are starting to do it.

            For Example: adult category...

I was at a pow wow this past week and was talking to some cloth and buckskin dancers and got to talking about the origin of the cloth style of dancing. I heard an interesting story and since you are a moderator here, an elder AND your name is capitialized, you obviously are the more knowledgeable of...

            by spookynative
how old is too old to dance fancy? I'm Jingle now, but I used to dance fancy a few years ago and even at 25 (the age I was at the time) I felt all old..
But now, at 33, I'd like to dance fancy again..
            what do you guys think?
