  • First Time Head Lady

I am going to be head lady for the first time this september, 2 days after my 18th birthday. I am so honored by this, however I am not sure on what type of protocol to use for the give away. I know I am supposed to give to the AD, MC, Head Man, Host drum.. but who else.. and what type of gift ideas do you have for the dancers, children, and other drums??? Also, am I supposed to supply the potato for the potato dance, the broom for the broom dance, and candy for the children's children dance, how much should be brought? would bringing bannanas and lemons and water for the drums and dnacers be acceptable?

Thanks so much for any advice and help..

Be sure to also give away to the water boy, head gourd dancer or gourd group if they have one and the Princess if there is one. Usually the drums get cigarettes and money or even a shawl they can sell off to get gas money. Little gifts for women singers or friends could be just plastic bowls with a washcloth and hand towel, or travel items, or even fruit and candy. Or just do a combination of the three. Blankets are good to give away. Usually the Head man will get a pendleton and the head singer or host drum however they are doing it. Then you can also buy serapis which are cheaper and you can give to AD's and other people. Water boy you usually just give money to. Lots of people will also buy little gift bags and fill them with things. You can get a lot of towels, washcloths, hand lotions, soaps, at the dollar stores too if you need to shop on a budget. Oh and don't forget to give to whoever asked you. If it was a pow wow committee you need to give to them. Sometimes you can give them groceries, or a blanket or a shawl. I'm sure others know of more things to give away as well. I've been princess and head lady quite a few times so I've been there done that!!! Hope this helps though!

BTW, if a male tradish dancer in a yellow shirt and a black vest is at the powwow, you must give him your car.

What does being Head Lady mean? I have heard of head man and lady at powwow but never thought about asking what it means to the woman who is one. Oh, there's a giveaway with this honor? Does this honor come from the powwow committee and do they decide cause the person is a good or well-known/ respected dancer?

I support blueberries, apples and mini marshmallows as a feast food.

                Head Dancer Giveaway
                by rezgranny
I've been asked to be head lady dancer at our annual pow-wow, I'm very honored. I'd like to know what people think of me sharing in the cost of the feast for the dancers, drummers, veterns and elders as opposed to having a traditional giveaway? If I do have a giveaway, do I have one only for the trad...

What is expected of Head Dancers
                by WhoMe
I have been to powwows where there are head dancers who aren't friendly, look mean or bored, publically gripe, show up late, don't get out to dance every dance and didn't show up at all for an entire session.

What are some expectations of good head man and head woman dancers?

Hello everyone! So lets get into it... what are the qualities and responsibilities of a head man/ woman? What do you expect from your head man/ woman? Have a great day and take care out there in your travels!

What would be your criteria for choosing head staff (Emcees, host drums, arena director, head dancers)?

Is knowledge and experience in the powwow arena your first consideration or is using them as a drawing card your first consideration?
