  • Dance Shawl size?

Hello! I'd like to begin making my dance shawl, but am not sure what the dimensions of the fabric should be. Anyone here able to tell me? I would really appreciate any and all advice. Thanks! Jan

mine are usually a full shawl, from hand to hand, in case i wear it over my shoudlers.

some are also making quarter size shawls, mostly for just dancing.

I tend to measure mine against myself, since some people are shorter or taller than me, it will fit my hands. SO I 'm sorry i don't really have acurate measurements to give you.
    Well will wonders never cease.....

I love big ribbon shawls you can wrap up in and that are heavy and hang/fold well...so I make 3 yard shawls in heavy materials and 2.5 yard shawls in satins.

This is my first time to make a shawl, what type of fabric would be good for a shawl.

The way I measure a lady for a shawl is to have her stick her arms straight out in front of her (like a zombie ) and use a tape measure to measure from fingertip, up the arm, to the center of back of your neck (or backbone)..........then double that amount, and add 2 inches for hem. Seems to come out right for each person.

my Mom would always have us stand up straight with our arms up at our sides like a "T" and measure from fingertip across the back to fingertip and add 2 inches also for the hem she also used gaberdine. we would be able to fold it in half with fringe on all four sides of course....lol

Typically I use gabardine as well, but I am working on one right now made of one of those multi colored blankets like you get in Mexico...gonna have lots of fringe and lots of color.....

My sister in law fringes shawls for a lady and she keeps what ever is left of each roll and tucks it back, I asked her one day what are you going to do with all this? thinking theres not enough of one color to do a whole shawl? but she took her box of fring and neatly placed all the even pieces and fringed a shawl for herself, not looking she would just grab a piece and tie it on and it was really pretty and full, that reminds her of all her hard work and is bit of a convesation piece.
I got a fevah! And the only cure is more cowbell!!!

I am in the process of designing a new shawl for Shawl Dancing. My last Fancy Shawl I made was a weee bit to long, as I went with more of a traditional length. Like 54 x something inches. It worked out great arm length wise, but, I always had to fold the top over by several inches to...

Hi, I would like to make my own shawl. Could someone tell me what the correct length would be including the fringe? I often see the shawls are 60" and the fringe 13" or 14". Not sure if that total size is supposed to be 73" or if the fringe in included the the length of 60"....
